Hello to all from a newcomer...soon to become a "first-time" tractorman. My compliments on conducting one of the most civil and friendly exchanges on the internet!
Would like to thank all of you for the wealth of information that you have contributed to this site. Over the past several months I have spent many hours "lurking" here, adding to my (previously non-existent) store of tractor lore.

Your knowledge and experience have been of immense help in forming a reasonably sound plan for investing a considerable portion of my long-awaited retirement funds in a tractor /attachments to use on my 20+ acres here in Oregon ( retired last december after 37 years as a firefighter). {Uh-oh! ..probably already in trouble with the sentence-length police!}

If I unchain my curiosity and interest fully, I am sure I would soon wear out my welcome (assuming such exists), and your patience... at least if I haven't made a sincere effort to find my answers in what has already been posted.

Which brings me to my question... HOW DOES ONE ACCESS THE "ARCHIVES" which I have seen referred-to a number of times in these forums? I have "clicked-on" everything in sight (I think) and can't seem to find my way to any such place.

If I've overlooked something obvious, I apologize for the needless question... but I'm out of ideas.

I just became a tractor owner myself after months of picking the considerable brains of this board, so I share the gratitude you have expressed to these wonderful tractor folk. I am still impressed at the intelligence, civility and good humor of all who contribute.

Which reminds me -- now that you're not lurking any more, feel free to register so's we can get to know you and sneak a private message to you once in a while.

Thomas, I've only been to Oregon once myself (for two or three weeks); thoroughly enjoyed it, especially Canon Beach and the Tillimook cheese factory; beautiful mountains, beach, and forests in the west and west Texas like desert in the east./w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif Congratulations on the retirement, fireman!

Bird, the difference between Texas desert and Oregon desert is the elevation. Oregon desert is considered 'High desert' and believe me, it can and does get mighty cold in the winter! Many parts of it will get down into the -30 degree range at times. Cold enough to freeze the proverbial well diggers rump.

I have no doubt you're right, scruffy, but the only time I was there it was very nice on the coast, but quite warm in the eastern part of the state (August). In fact, when I crossed into Idaho and hit I-84 and stopped at the first Rest Area for a map, the lady there asked where I was going and I told her "anywhere that it's cooler." She gave me a map and directions to the Sawtooth area; it was great!

Bird, too bad you never cut across the central portion of Oregon (highway 20 for example), sure it can get hot, but it is a dry heat, and along the Gorge, (Columbia River) it has a tendancy to get into the 100's that time of year. South of there in the Cascades, it will be in the nineties, but can and normally once a month does have a freeze in the summer. Gardening is limited to root crops because of that, but is it nice sleeping weather! 95 in the daytime 40's at night!
Sawtooth's are nice, coast is nice (I grew up on the sw Ore. coast) but a hot day on the coast is 75-80 degrees and its liable to rain you out on the 4th of July! I've also seen it snow in mid july in Central Oregon, whoopee. Kids liked it.

Scruffy, I did take that route 20. We entered Oregon at Biggs (from Washington state), followed the Columbia River to Portland, then route 26 to the coast, spent a week in Canon Beach, then down the coast to Coos Bay, then cut across to I-5 and up to Harrisburg for a week to tour a motorhome factory, then to Bend and took route 20 through Burns and Ontario into Idaho. Very enjoyable trip.
