But I'll say this about used tractors....If you are not able to make an accurate guess about the mechanical condition & an estimate for the inevitable repairs, best stay away from it. Don't even waste your time.

The other side to that story is for a person willing to learn to do some repairs, his dollar sure does buy a whole lot of tractor in the current market.

And the good times are not limited to tractors, it's a buyer's market right now for anything used - from houses to cars/trucks to machine tools.

You are sooooo right. Many of the older Baby Boomers are having fire sales getting rid of stuff or trying to pass it on to someone.

There are so many classic motorcycles out there now, that nobody wants them. A local baby boomer guy has dropped his expensive Harely price 4X in 2 years and still no takers. He and his wife want to retire in the south, yet can't even unload all the collected toys!

I have a retired co-worker who has 4 classic airplanes. The younger generation don't want to own and fly. He can't figure out what to do with them.

I know a guy who has several hit and miss engines, and old equipment they powered. Not sure he can give them away.

I definitely am more inclined to shop for used stuff than new. Older equipment has lless emissions, and way less electronics than the new stuff. Old stuff is far simpler to work on, but getting parts can be harder.

Just bought an Engineering grade 3D printer and am looking for a small metal lathe and milling machine. Those three items will make keeping older stuff viable a lot easier. I am looking into getting into lost filament 3D printing to metal casting. Very similar to lost wax, but you use the 3D printer to make the pattern, then melt/burn out the plastic instead of the wax. Whether I get there, kind of depends on what used equipment I come across.

On the YTOG, for the past year members are doing 3D CAD models and posting vintage tractor parts to our community. In 2020 we seen the supply chain snap. Its not any better today. In fact, we lost some of the distributors who sold out or tossed in the towel and went full retirement.

Some of the members did 3D CAD files for the 4WD shafts too. Sent the model out for quote and were surprised at places hungry for work with fair pricing. In many cases, better than buying new from Yanmar, Deere or Cub Cadet!

I see this with many antique cars…

The generation that identifies passes and many vehicles fall from favor.

You are so right... Hardly a day goes by that I don't get a card or letter, or an unsolicited sales pitch on the phone by some cold-caller wanting to buy my property or house. Probably eveyone else here on TBN gets the same time-wasting solicitations too.

But in the last ten years exactly one person has stopped by to ask about the old tractor sitting out front - and it even has a sort of a loader on it too. It even starts. Well, sometimes it starts....

I guess it varies by region, that's not what I'm seeing here. I just checked the local Craigslist, there's exactly one tractor listed for sale, a 2003 Kubota L48 with 3840 hours. Asking $28,500. I wouldn't say that's a buyer's market price.

I've found I can't go by CL or FB prices. Chinese diesel mini ex's that sold last week for $6500 plus a 10% auction commission were being listed on FB for $11,999.

Nor would I. Whatever that L48 seller is doing is not the buyer's market we were talking about - which is a buyers market in anything - houses, cars, trucks, boats, or tractors that only need simple repairs like an engine rebuild, or new hydraulics. Those are the ones that are going for bargain prices. Or even as giveaways.

I agree that a 2003 Kubota listing for nearly new price - with nearly 4000 hrs - is a world apart from any reasonable used market I can think of. Now if it was going for $7500 because it needs engine repairs it might fit.

But, if you get the contact information and call in a few weeks, and he still has it, the price may be much more reasonable.

In November, a guy listed a rear bumper which fits my Dodge 3500, on Craigslist. Price was a bit high, at $2500. I was on Craigs List looking for wheels to fit my brothers Dodge 2500, a week ago, and the guy still had the bumper listed. I called to see if he still had it. He did. So, I asked him bottom line, how much he would let it go for. $1000. I asked him if he could deliver it to my sister's house a few miles from his location. I now own it. I'll pick it up next time I'm at my sister's place.
