I've really enjoyed reading this thread. As someone who buys full synthetic TSC oil for small engines, and I have lots, (used to buy Napa oil which was made by some major refiner) plus Rotella T5 for diesel engines with annual 100 hour intervals on small engines and 200 hour intervals on larger tractor diesels,
I'm really wondering now should I be going into my local Walmart to buy oil instead. I also used Mobil 1 religiously for decades, and then realized there were much less expensive alternatives with capabilities far beyond my needs. I'm not a racer or a professional mower. I don't putter around but I always run the tractor or mower at far less than full rpm, usually with pto rpm around 500. So for me, I don't need T6 or Royal Purple.
But clearly some of you do. I don't need the best because like many of you I'm concerned over condensation. There are damp mornings my large Massey is dripping in water in the barn, as the cold metal hits the warmer humid air. So my concern is water, and the easy cure is increasing change intervals, not buying super high performance oil.
I recycle all my oil so i don't feel badly changing it a little more often than technically I have to. Though we all know the ecological impact of most refineries is not pegging the green meter. Better to use as little as reasonable.
If I pay three bucks a quart for oil, I should get three dollar oil. If I pay five bucks a quart, I sure should get something more than what the 3 dollar oil is giving or I'm getting crappy value. And I think value is what most of us are looking for, once we are sure we are meeting minimum or better than minimum specs.
