Are WalMart SuperTech oils worth it?

if you are asking is the supertech synthetic is as good as Moible one synthetic, Amsoil, rotella T6, etc,.
The answer is no. There is a reason it cost less.

Go to the website bob is the oil guy. Many people will have a VOA performed on oils and post the results.
I can assure you that supertech synthetic won't stand up to the major brand synthetic specs

From a functional point of view the main technical differences in motor oil meeting the same specs and standards in my view is how much they spend on advertising.

I just bought 20 quarts the WM full synthetic motor with the 2nd Gen GM logo on it for $3.20 a quart. With the speed these new Direct Injection gas engines can crap up the oil and engine boggles my mind but I guess that is better than having to breath it.

Now I would agree with that. Worth what you pay for it. I think so. As long as a person doesn't expect it to be equal to the major manufactures' top of the line oils.

The O.P. merely asked if Walmart's SuperTech oils were worth it, not how it compares with major brand oils. Some people just get carried away trying to make comparisons that weren't asked for. While it may be not as good, is the best really necessary in all cases?

If you quote what the OP stated, quote it all. not just part..

Here's the rest of it.....''I've read a lot of favorable comments lately. Seems it might be the same product the big names sell but without the obligatory nosebleed markup?''

''some people just get carried away trying to make comparisons that weren't asked for''

With this question, I would say he's asking how it compares to the ''big names'' .

Are they ok to use ? yes. Just don't expect the same quality as the ''Big Names''

It all depends on the oil as to how fast it craps out.

While an oil may ''meet the specs''. there are some oils that go beyond just ''meeting the specs''. Those brands tend to last longer than those just ''meeting the specs''

Engines tend to run hotter today than they did in yrs past. Oils today also have to resist break down due to these hotter temps.
Then, the oil has to over come all this emissions crap on newer vehicles

Very good point.

Other than piece of mind.
you would need to go to the site and search out the supertech VOA . then search out mobil one VAO
I tried it out several years ago, and with UAO at 4500 miles. The TBN was at 2.

I don't know if you read a a comment there, or read where someone posted UAO spec sheet

I'm willing to bet that supertech synthetic isn't going to have a 12 TBN though.
Here’s the thread I linked to earlier in the thread: SuperTech Synthetic 5w2 (6,576 miles) Genesis Coupe 3.8 - Bob Is The Oil Guy

It looks to me that the oil was holding up for 10,000 mile drain intervals (prior to that one of 6,000). As most cars specify 7,500, many oil life systems extendthat to 9-10,000, and some fanatics still change every 3,000, it seems to be doing the job at a lower price.

We had our fleet analyzed regularly, and I asked the Tribologist once if there was any benefit to changing oil more often. “Yes - you create very high quality waste oil.” So the fact that a more expensive product might have higher specs at the end of the drain oil doesn’t seem to matter.

All that said, We pretty much only use SuperTech as a top-off oil. It’s the spare quart we keep in the trunk. We use [ungodly expensive] Motul in the WRX, Rotella T6 Synthetic for cars, tractors etc, and Castrol Power1 4T Synthetic in motorcycles.

The problem I have is that many guys buy the most expensive oil they can and then change at 5000 miles. I'm still in that category but am beginning to learn that salesmanship has a lot to do with the price of oil and that many oils considered ''lesser'' are really pretty darn close and wholly adequate.

I wouldn't shop at Walmart or even enter that place needing to go potty really bad. Fresh twist of adjectives I could say I wouln't go in it...I would go on it. Oh...did I mention I hate that place?

That's pretty amazing. I would love to know his secret. I have never been able to get as many miles on supertech synthetic oil

He should try Amsoil Signature Series oil. He would probably be able to extend his drains out to 25K, or more, which would save him a ton on oil changes !

I think Supertech is fine for low performance small engines such as in lawnmowers. That's what I use it for. It may be OK also for newer road vehicles, but I don't use it there. It says it meets or exceeds the specs for newer engines.

I can say, I believe, that if it has the same specs as the owners manual requires the it is going to be OK.

With that being said, I will tell you I had 2 truck engines fail while running Pennzoil, and I pull the valve covers on another truck and found lots, and lots of sludge. It also was Pennzoil. I quit using Pennzoil.

I am one of those guys that over changes the oil. My Diesel truck has 26K on it and has had 8 oil changes. I don't put many miles on a year but make sure I change the oil to get any condensation out as well as it makes me look over the vehicle and check it all out. Figure it is cheap insurance and helps me keep an eye on the machines so it is worth it to me.

Are WalMart SuperTech branded oils, synthetic & dino, worth it or not? Same question with their gear oil and tractor trans oil? Yes or no?

I've read a lot of favorable comments lately. Seems it might be the same product the big names sell but without the obligatory nosebleed markup?

Walmart would go out for bids for finished oil (include ad pack) from various suppliers. Lower cost one probably gets the bid. You never know where the oil comes from. Kinda like gasoline from outfits from Costco, etc.

Other companies, like Quaker State, go somewhere in between. They go out for bids for base oil and then use their own ad packs for finished product. For many years and likely still now, Quaker State got most of their base oil from Exxon.

Motor oil treads are a good place to apply logic to explain our emotionally based decisions.

I have used supertech at least 10 plus years, every vehicle i own gets it, every small engine i use gets it. no issues, car is currently at 150k, Not a single oil related issue yet, over 7-8 vehicles i have used it in. 5k oil changes. also use their oil filters.

^^^^^ I guess I am a fanatic. I even use Mobil 1. :applause: :applause:

I read in a WRX/STi forum that Mobil 1 was a No/No. (not sure if it's true or not) Most of them said it didn't hold up. I just use a quality synthetic and change it and the filter regularly.

There are so many forms of M1 now (just like Amsoil) aarrgghhhh!, you really need to be specific about which version of an oil "didn't hold up". It's just like saying "all" Fram filters suck. Far too many folks speak in generalities about things and say absolutes when it's simply not the case.
