All this discussion on using the high quality motor oils.....Is there a case to be made for having too high of a quality motor oil?
I tend to think maybe yes but am not ready to put it in words.
Detergents vs non-detergents. Additives vs non-additives.

I tend to think motor oils are somewhat like hydraulic oils. There are hundreds of hydraulic oils out there. They have many need specific uses. An additive that is good for one thing may be bad for another.

I think almost all rated oils either meet spec for the grade or are a whisker better-different because of an additive. A "too high" of quality would only be if you bought the typical in-spec oil and changed it out at 3,000 miles, thereby wasting the benefit of the advanced oil rating.

I've really enjoyed reading this thread. As someone who buys full synthetic TSC oil for small engines, and I have lots, (used to buy Napa oil which was made by some major refiner) plus Rotella T5 for diesel engines with annual 100 hour intervals on small engines and 200 hour intervals on larger tractor diesels,
I'm really wondering now should I be going into my local Walmart to buy oil instead. I also used Mobil 1 religiously for decades, and then realized there were much less expensive alternatives with capabilities far beyond my needs. I'm not a racer or a professional mower. I don't putter around but I always run the tractor or mower at far less than full rpm, usually with pto rpm around 500. So for me, I don't need T6 or Royal Purple.
But clearly some of you do. I don't need the best because like many of you I'm concerned over condensation. There are damp mornings my large Massey is dripping in water in the barn, as the cold metal hits the warmer humid air. So my concern is water, and the easy cure is increasing change intervals, not buying super high performance oil.

I recycle all my oil so i don't feel badly changing it a little more often than technically I have to. Though we all know the ecological impact of most refineries is not pegging the green meter. Better to use as little as reasonable.

If I pay three bucks a quart for oil, I should get three dollar oil. If I pay five bucks a quart, I sure should get something more than what the 3 dollar oil is giving or I'm getting crappy value. And I think value is what most of us are looking for, once we are sure we are meeting minimum or better than minimum specs.

As I mentioned above, I'll bet the extreme majority of oils are very close to their grade specs. Enter the marketing people that convince the reader that their very expensive oil or whatever oil is better than some other oil that's rated the same, and that anyone that would not buy their oil was a Neanderthal. I don't think so. I want excellent oil but am learning that high priced brand names might be the same or very close to the lower buck stuff I used to avoid because I was led to believe it was inferior.

There is a link earlier in this post where they show oils that meet specs and those that don't. It appears to me the ones that don't must be regional because I never heard of them. There is an amazing amount of oils out there that don't meet spec but none of them were major brand names that I saw.

Saying that Walmart is a squzzy place I would not want to be seen in.

It depends on what location you're in. We have something like 6 Walmarts around us. More like 10 if you travel just ten miles or so. Different parts of town. A couple you go into, you want to take a shower immediately after leaving. Others are as nice and clean as Macy's.

Walmarts draw their customers from the location they're in.

And if I'm in there most of them are like me. Same with TSC. I think B n' D is just some sort of elitist who is anti W-M. I have family members who are and it's a liberal mindset thing.

Take a look here as to what happens to oil ring in a piston and why they get clogged up.

So if someone wants to use cheap wally wurl oil....by all means please enjoy...

I'll stick to Amsoil, Rottella T6 and M1.

when your engine starts going through a quart every 1k miles or so....guess which is cheaper, a 70 dollah oil change or a new engine. Heh..yeah...

I'll see myself out. Good night yah'll...lol..

Run the Wally synthetic in everything except the diesels and thats because Wally World doesnt sell a diesel synthetic.
No problems and everything I own is at 200,000 or more.
Even the so called throw away Kohler Courage is still humming along fine.

ST oil is good stuff and I use it all the time. Even the 0w20 full synthetic is under $16 a jug here in my parts. Really hard to beat for the money.

I had a thought. Can you imagine a company having an oil blended for their brand that exceed specs and not providing technical data to support their claims.

So - either the oil meets the specs and that's it OR it exceeds specs and they have the data to prove it.
