Before we moved back to town 10 years ago, I used a 55 gallon steel barrel sitting on 3 bricks to let air under it, to burn trash. I had drilled one half inch hole in the center bottom of the barrel to let rain drain out, 3 or 4 holes around the lower edge to let air in, and a screen on top to keep any sparks from flying out. And then what didn't burn, we put out once a week for the garbage pickup; just one individual driving a pickup and pulling a trailer with high sides. He was very reliable and charged $12 a month. His other job was driving a school bus.:D

Bird, I set mine up exactly the same way, except I shot holes through mine:laughing:

Burning barrels aren't allowed in NY anymore.. But, I live far enough out in the middle of nowhere that once and a while you can see a little smoke rising from the back yard. Other than that it's $3 a bag(33gal) to drop off at the local landfill. Sucks cause the last place I lived was $10/yr for a permit for all the trash I could take.

Sure seems to be a lot of disparity in the methods and costs of trash disposal reported here. I don't really have much to have hauled away EXCEPT for actual trash, such as used kitty litter, paper waste, etc. because I have a large burn pile out back and I recycle the vast majority of what would normally be trash at the recycle center 6 miles distant. Since I could probably burn a good part of what I set out for trash collection I have thought about doing that, but the township takes a negative view of residents burning household waste. I wonder sometimes which alternative is better for the air and groundwater: Incinerating materials that can legally be burnt, or sending them to a landfill to be buried?

I love our trash service. We have Waste Management of WV they charge $46 every three months. They take what ever we put out as long as it's bagged plus once a month have a bulky goods day. They will also take 8 tires a year.

$19 per month weekly pickup. There are only two days a year they don't run, Christmas and I forget the other. We only have a small bag of trash each week. The plastic, glass, cans, paper, cardboard gets taken to the town recycling drop off.

I am happy with the service. I could haul it myself, but it's 20 miles one-way in a direction I never go and $2 a bag.

If I don't put it out in a can with a lid, the ravens and crows will have it shredded and spread all over. The driver always carries the empty can about 30 feet up the drive to keep it from getting blown into the road.

We have a 4 yard (6' wide) dumpster, about $130 a month depending on fuel surcharge. We clean stalls daily for the 3 horses that stay indoors every night, use the FEL to dump the stuff in the dumpster. Household stuff gets bagged and tossed in. It is nice to be able to cut stuff up and just toss it in without having to haul it away.

We tried the local pickup service but we were limited to 4 bags a week and no bulk items. Our driveway is 650' long. I had to carry the cart up there in the FEL and they counted bags, left any over four. With all the feed bags and other stuff it did not work.

Where I used to live, we had WM and they did a good enough job but the price was up to about 100 or so a quarter back around 2006 or maybe 2007. About that time I learned that there was a transfer station only seven miles away so I would stock pile my trash a little then take a load there for maybe ten bucks. We were boarding horses at the time so we had a lot of paper feed bags that I would burn.

We have three county permitted small time private haulers where I live now. Five bag limit for 13.50/month also set by the county. That's not much so I give my scrap metal to them on occasion or maybe a defunct appliance. I don't have enough scrap metal to justify the the trip to the yard so it works for both of us. These folks use an old dually box truck and maybe a pickup with sideboards, no fancy rigs here.

With no laws to break or neighbors to offend, I still burn my waste paper carefully seperating any plastics even wraps. That also keeps any personal info out of the eyes of any "pickers".

Like you, I also burn all receipts or personal papers of any kind. They never go in the trash.

I get double dipped on the cost of trash removal. Since I live in the county, I have to pay a private hauler (Burrtec), but their price is very reasonable. But, my property tax also includes a fee for trash removal, but only if you live in a franchise area. Fortunately, the County issues a "free" dump card in lieu of pickup and I can take a load a week to the dump.

Burrtec observes the national holiday schedule, but then they pick up one day later which in my case is Saturday.

I have Northern Illinois Disposal and they have been great. For a little background, I live on a gravel road- the main gravel road is in front of my house, but my driveway exits to a side gravel road and is about 120' from the main road. The county does not plow the side road, it is supposed to be done by a contractor, and at the time was doing a poor job. I get home in the late morning because I work 3rd shift and there had been a pretty good amount of snow overnight- the garbage man comes early. A couple years ago I got a call from the owner or manager and he had asked me if I wouldn't mind taking the garbage out to the main road since the truck could not get down the side road (about 16" of snow on it). He had already came in his personal pickup to grab the garbage that the other driver could not (or would not), but asked nicely and professionally if I would be willing to do this. He had also called the one other house that is a few hundred yards back on this side road if they could bring the garbage down by my house, at least when there was a big storm. I thought this was a reasonable request, and thought it was great that he personally came and got the trash the truck left behind without me even knowing about it- it was before I even got home.

BTW, I pay $58 every 2 months, they come every week. They always take whatever I put out there, usually 3 wheeled cans, but sometimes "extras".
