As Big As you can Buy

I bought a 125 gallon tank at TSC for $170 or so, also a 3pt Carry all $73, and an 8 roller pto pump $130. I then built a 60" boom sprayer for $40 from pipe and fittongs from Lowes and sprayer nozels from TSC. I can now spray the weeds in my yard with ease and have a wand sprayer for trees/bushes that is just one of those hand wands from TSC for $12 hooked up to a garden hose coming off of the PTO pump. Just dont turn off the water at the wand, the pressure enlarges your hose and can burst it because it is not made for high pressure. Turn your PTO off when you need to stop the water flow. You can also buy 3pt hitch sprayers all ready to go but they are $900 for a 110 gallon boom sprayer plus $100 for the hand wand kit. I think I made the right chouce by building mine myself.

If I understand correctly, Setho is talking about "diminishing returns". At what point does the size/cost of the tractor exceed what can be gained from its ownership.

This is kind of off-topic for the thread, but for 3 acres I'd recommend one of the small electric tank sprayers. They generate plenty of pressure - one of the drawbacks is that they don't have the "umph" to survive large usage for long. But on 3 acres you can probably serve your needs with one that'll set you back less than $200.
