Both baking soda and ammonia are basic (alkali or pH >7). Perhaps you meant vinegar (acetic acid) instead of ammonia? Now I haven't heard this, but I'm no expert on the topic...

What we've found to work is to make a thick paste out of baking soda and water and spread it on the area where you are stung.
Dat's what I said... Now you have 2 votes for baking soda...

I just found it again,

If a bee stung you, apply ammonia to the sting to neutralize the toxins.
If a wasp stung you, apply vinegar to the sting to neutralize the toxins.
So I suppose ammonia or baking soda would work on a bee sting. I have seen several mentions on ways to relieve jellyfish sting is by urinating on it which would be for the ammonia I suppose so they must be similar to a bee sting.

Those 'stop itch' roller pen things for mosquito bites have enough ammonia in them that the smell is noticeable.

The wife and a helper hauled a trailer load of construction debris yesterday.

This load will be taken to the dump tomorrow. If the load is less than 2000 lbs, our county dump does not charge us. For loads greater than 2000 lbs, the charge is $50/ton. Our first load was a little under 3000 lbs so the dump fee was $70.

Wikipedia has a very informative article on bee and wasp sting treatments. Ice has been shown in studies to be the most effective treatment.

When I got stung by the wasp beside my eye, I put ice on it immediately. It controlled the swelling and I have had very little pain and no itching. I did wake up the next morning with noticeable swelling but no other symptoms. I'm thinking more ice treatments would have helped the swelling that occurred the second and later days. You can still see swelling around my right eye 5 days after getting stung.
