Never heard of that requirement in single family residential. It's not a bad idea. It's common in multi-family and commercial though.

I've never seen them any other way for normal use. Once there was a 30' span that went 12" centers and they still complained about the jiggle, but it probably only moved an eight of an inch. I just heard there's a test and a cure with 1/2" plywood..

I did a very similar thing with our retirement house in OR. The lower story has a 10' ceiling. Above that is a 3' chase

Buddie of mine had that kind of space to spare and he put a cathedral ceiling in, made a hunting/fishing 14x16 shack in his basement with wood on the walls and ceiling. No lake, but I'm jealous anyway..

We weren't looking at my plans jake; we were looking at his (the BI's ) rafter/joist span table.

@Jake: this is a "what happened to me", driven by the inspector. I also asked about the 1/2", and was told that's why it's called a smoke block not a fire stop. Main thing for Obed is to ask when an inspector is on site so _if_ something like this is required he can find out about it before things are run through the trusses.

I have a two story area for the living room, and where the 2nd floor truss by the kitchen ended into that 2 story space, I put in s 3/4" plywood to slow down flames in the event of calamity. That was based on seeing a few houses with a similar situation that burned, and where the flames licked over the edge that engineered truss gave way much faster/sooner than the others.

I can only imagine what Obed is thinking sometimes. BTW, I am enjoying the original intent of this thread.....Obed building his house and living in the RV experience.

All it takes is a sarcastic, "I know more than you do" contentious so and so-one who interprets idiocy on the part of others by reading half of what they wrote- to convince him that he might just try to figure things out on his own-only asking when he's left with no choice.

Guys like jake are the reason I learned to despise many in the building trade.
