Auger: Buy or rent

Curious... If you justify buying a PHD and there are others that need fences or at least the holes dug, what would a guy charge per hole?

You don't want to go in the hole on the deal.

I'm curious if they're good for ice fishing holes. Not going to try to start a global warming Al goreing politicizeing ice drilling post... But, it has been a decade or so since we saw the potential for thick-frozen lakes like we have right now...

I appreciate the offer!! Now that the price of fuel is coming down, I might be able to drive over there cheaper than actually buying a new PHD...

I had a job about 2 years ago that required me installing steel I beam for scoreboards at 5 different sites. The job was going to take about a week with drilling the holes and pouring the concrete. The holes were 7' deep and 36" diameter. I bought the auger for my track loader and rented the bit. I should have just bought the bit. I found my self racing to get the bit back to the rental place. The next time I used the auger I bought the bit. I now have the auger and 4 bits of varying sizes and The don't get used very often but when they do it is very profitable. On one job me and 3 guys installed 650' of PVC fence in one day. The ground was dredged from a retention pond and was left to sit for 2 years before the builder started construction. The handheld auger just sat there and spun did nothing.

I just bought a new leinbach 7300 and have yet to put it together. Picked it up at thier store and the price was right. $425 including tax and auger. I think a great price. I do not have many post to set but if it is only a few it will be well worth the investment.
I have never used one and the instruction manuel does seem to not cover how to use. so I guess some on the jo training is necessary. I have found that getting older you must work smarter more that hard so if i can find any tool or equipment to make the work somewhat easier I opt for the smart way. good luck and straight digging.

First rule of PHDigging is to keep all body parts and their clothing away from all moving parts of the PHD. Second rule is to not let the auger self feed itself into the ground. Always allow it take a little dirt and bring it to the surface before feeding it more.

I have had good luck with my 7300. I havent used it a real lot but it has come in handy a few times so far ! I think you will enjoy it. I have the 12" auger and its perfect for what Im using it for !
