Just looking to see if anyone has mounted an axe on there tractor anywhere. It seems like it could be a useful addition while working out in the woods along with the chainsaw. Thanks in advance for any input.

I don't mount one on my tractor, but I do carry one on my tool belt when I'm felling trees (I use it for driving my plastic ledges). I use a Grizzly Peak Axe Scabbard, mounted on the back of my belt. It has really cut down on the amount of time I spend looking for where I last left it in the woods

I can't even think what one would use an Axe for anymore. I use a sledge for wedges. I last used an Axe for cutting roots but found a sawzall works better with less dirt in your hair!

You could find an original or copy of a military tool holder, then mount it on your tractor.

That's a cool idea, I will tune up the old google machine and give it a search. John_Mc had a nice idea to with the scabbard. Thanks!!!

A sledge is just too much to carry around with me when doing a lot of tree felling, and it just doesn't take that much to drive a plastic felling wedge (I'm not talking about splitting logs with it). It would be one thing if I were always working right near the house, or even right near my tractor, but neither is very often the case. Bring it out to take one or two trees down? OK, maybe. Bring it out for a day of felling? I don't think so. The axe is easy to carry in the scabbard on my belt, with the handle resting against my back. Reach back and grab it when needed, slip it back in when done. The weight is enough to drive my wedges, but not so much that it bugs me to carry around. I use the Stihl Pro Splitting Hatchet - at 20" it's on the short side, but has a head just under 3#, which is usually just fine for driving felling wedges. It's short enough that the handle doesn't bonk me in the head when it's in the holster. I also find it handy for trimming off those small sucker limbs that I didn't see when the chainsaw was in my hands, or for tapping in a wedge to hold the kerf open when bucking wood that's under pressure.

If you send that scabbard company the dimensions of your axe head, they will recommend which of their scabbards are the best fit. I found out about them on a Swedish YouTube video (in English, fortunately for me) where a forester/logger was explaining what he put on his tool belt: Best Tool Belt Setup for Logging. Turns out, it was made here in the states.

It was interesting to see what he carries with him, and why he carries it where he does. I use many of the same tools that guy does (with the exception of the lifting hook I own one, but don't use it much. If I were cutting smaller wood, I imagine it would be more useful).

X2!

I have the Fiskars X25 Splitting axe. It's great for splitting wood with an axe. If I did more of it by hand, I'd probably have an X27. My maul rarely leaves the tool shed anymore. I generally split either a half or a full cord (4'x4'x8' stacked) by hand each year. The rest I split with a hydraulic splitter - it's nice being able to just throw the gnarly ones in the splitter pile, or in the bonfire pile.

I have the x25 as well and use it to split kindling once a week.. Indestructible tools, I also have a Fiskars demolition sledge that I use a lot..
