I got the parts back today. Here what they did:
1) New parts - the stepped cylinder and the shaft
2) Grinded down the steps in the cylinder to enhance the steps
3) Straighten the lever that engages on the step to align it
4) Grinded the top of the stepped cylinder so that the knob is not wobbly

It looks like it is going to work better with this improvements. We'll see when I mount the assembly on the tractor and put the MMM back. Attached are some pictures of the new and old shaft and of the wohle assembly.

I will report back how it all works.

Just to report back that the new parts lined up very well and the problem is fixed. I mowed an area that I have never mowed before which is very uneven and the MMM held in place very well. I didn't get a chance to adjust the height in accordance to the knob settings, but based on what I have read in this forum that is hard to get it right. I'll be happy if I can line up the pins to hold the deck in the up position. Right now, the holes are way off. I don't care much about the actual height and the numbers on the knob - to me they are just settings 1..2..3..4..TOP.
