Baby Pig. Now What?

BIG happy pig! Do you have any idea what he weighs?

He was 508 on new year's day a year ago. I haven't figured out since then, but would guess 520 or so. His growing has really slowed down, but will never stop.

I just took this one of Oscar this morning. He creates beds all over the place, and after it rains, they turn into mud holes that he really enjoys. This is the first time that I was able to get a picture of him in his glory with an audience!!!

If one hog can do that much rooting it's not hard to imagine how much damage a large group of feral hogs can do. I nearly got thrown off my tractor's seat several years ago while cutting a hay pasture. I had run through some really deep holes dug by feral hogs that were hidden by long grass.

I see your ducks love Oscar's mud holes too. Anytime I turn over dirt or turn on a water hose, my ducks are there to dabble.

My Grand dad said he had a Poland China boar that reached 1200 pounds. I've hear of them getting bigger, but never seen one. In fact, about the biggest I ever recall seeing was a Duroc boar that weighed about 750...and you could smell him from 100 yards away. Being from farming country, it made me wonder why no one ever had these huge hogs. I recall my VoAg teacher saying that they were worthless when they got that big, especially a boar, which was way too big for breeding.

Oscar is just one of those things that sort of happened by accident, that I will never do again. Mostly he just sleeps and does his own thing. Tearing up the ground is a bit annoying, but no something that I worry about too much. I have way too many wild hogs all over the place doing a lot more damage that I have to deal with. I've shot as many as three in a day without any impact on their numbers. I just need to get my place fenced in to keep them out.

My Uncle's boar got big enough to break a sows legs when he mounted it, so two pigs got slaughtered.
