It's hard to beat the look of a shiny black truck with nice chrome accents. The more GMC's you see without that chrome grill - the better you'll like yours.

A set of molded GMC mudflaps will help to keep the dirt those big tires throw up off the sides of that machine.

At the wife's advise, I had the dealer put a bedliner, tarp and mud flaps on it...She said, what's the difference, you're going to bring it home and buy that stuff anyway. She was right.

It looks like they are referring to the shaft that holds the spider gears in place. If that shaft were to slip out of position, it would lock up the carrier from rotating. If it were to break into pieces, it's likely that the carrier would still lock up, but could break loose and take more items with it. It's hard to say if there would be any differential action, but you would definitely have one or both wheels locking up.
My guess is it would snap a axle, break a U joint, or twist the drive shaft off if it locks up fails.

I have seen it happen on a Dodge 1500 a few months back. I was driving over to Central Illinois to get a boat on I55. The truck could not be 2 years old. Blew the rear cover off the diff and twisted the drive shaft.

Well if that stray pin locks up the ring and pinion, that could make for an interesting experience. The blurb I saw on Yahoo! looked more like the posi unit..Appears not.

A friend of mine had something like this happen on a 68 Camero drag car. He hit the trans-brake (accident) going through the traps at 125mph...Lucky he wasn't killed. The whole rear floor was blown out.

My 89 S-10 Blazer with the 4.3L had a catastrophic failure of the transfer case at about 40 mph. The truck had about 33,000 miles on it at the time. I was driving down the road on a Sunday and a lady was turning right in front of me so I lifted off the accelerator. Thats when all heck broke loose. The next thing I know I am facing the pavement.

What had happened was the shift fork or what ever you want to call it in the transfer case that slides the gear from 4-high to 4-low broke from its retainer and locked it up. It instantly twisted the rear drive shaft in half and the rear half dug into the hot asphalt and lifted the rear of the truck strait up. Tore the transfer case nearly from its mounts, broke the rear drive shaft, actually stretched the axle u-bolts, and damage both rear leaf springs. Scarred the crap out of me. Got it fixed under warranty and traded it on a Toyota SR5 pickup that when for well over 160,000 miles when I traded it on a new Honda Civic.

Chris, I can honestly say..I've never had that happen on any of my GM's...Ever...Including numerous S-10's.

Seems that you just have really bad luck with them. Better that you stick with what works for you.....Just sayin'

The only serious mechanical failure I've ever had was a blown 396 while racing a dual 4bbl Z28 where I wouldn't give up...Valve floated the big block and destroyed the oil pump...Certainly not GM's fault there.

My '82 S-10 Blazer (might have been an '83, don't remember) with the new 700R4 had some issues, until the racing tranny guy had a shot at it back in '84. After that, it would catch second with a 2.8...Once the issues were worked out with that tranny, it became a drag racing staple.

One detail I left out on the S10 Blazer...It was a mail truck that went from Pgh to Erie every night 7 days a week. No back seat, no carpet...No nothin'....Just hauled a truck load of mail back and forth.

My Dad bought if for me from the company that he worked for once it had just shy of 100K...The tranny didn't act up until around 130K...No real shame there.

What year did they start putting the 4.3 in the S10 Blazers, 88, 89? My dad still has one that was the 2nd year for that combination and he bought it with 800 miles on it with the passenger side smashed in, and a salvage title. He fixed it and has driven it since. It has somewhere in the mid 200k mile range on it now and, believe it or not, still runs fine. It's had a few minor issues, but nothing major. I bought a '90 S10 pickup when I worked at a dealership setup the same way and I had already gone through 5 transmissions in the first year and it finally dropped a valve running at about 2200 RPM. Don't recall Lemon Law stuff then, but I had to sue GM to get them to buy it back. The nerve of them, they wanted to deduct from it's value the "time I had and enjoyed it"! WTF?! It was almost always either in the shop or waiting to go in the shop. At least with my Toyota Avalon Lemon, once a year of heII was up, they just bought it back; no "sorry" or anything, but I got my money. I guess ya never know...
