Backhoe Boom Higher than Garage Door.

I have a old Case 680 K extend-hoe backhoe. My garage has a 12 foot high door but hangs 6 inches lower when open. I have not had a big deal, lowering the boom and locking back in place. However my luck ran out and I damaged several roof trusses when throwing back into locked boom position. I must have raised the rear too high. Has anyone tried another method and left the boom unlocked on a concrete floor. Even with the boom locked I chain the extend-hoe in place because it will drop and go thru the back of the building. Also if not locked in place it may move to one side or another. I raise the front bucket all the way up and has a manual locking bracket over one cylinder to keep it that way. I had this machine for my property use only for 25 years and use it a few times a year. Its a monster but worked well to load a dump truck when building a large pond. I thought maybe someone dealt with a similar situation. I am getting older and guess my judgement proved it. With the tires on the ground I have about 5 to 6 inches to trusses. Thanks

I keep my old Deere 310 in a barn, similar conditions. I have to lower the boom to get the tractor in and out of the barn. Once it's in, I swing the boom to the left and lower it to the ground (dirt floor), so that there's room to get other equipment in to the fuel tank. I haven't damaged anything, yet. It's a tight fit getting it in, with plenty of room once I'm through the door. I need to be focused when I move it in and out, which is a discipline.

Same here, I have a Ford 550 that I store in a metal hangar with a dirt floor. I lower the boom coming in, then raise it up, umcurl the bucket swing to one side and drop it thr bucket teeth into the dirt. I raise and block the loader to get it in further. It is an open door shelter, but I have banged the metal trusses a time or two. A full sized backhoe is a beast, but a beast that does its jobs handily.

Tim to construct a new building with a door and interior of adequate clearance.

My Clearspan has a 14 foot overhead door and 16 foot interior clearance. I keep my semi in it along with everything else. Garage is for cars and pickup truck only.

I have the same problem. Lower to get under the door, raise and lock. If I don’t lock it could ease down against the door. Have to remember to unlock and lower to back out. Since the M59 is a TLB it has 3pt hitch equipment 80% of the time so have some muscle/mind memory that doesn’t help. Sadly age hasn’t helped my memory.

Have only once bumped the gable rolling doors rails. Luckily no permanent damage.

Do celebrate when things go right.

In reality. tractors, especially larger ones are meant to keep in a barn or structure that will accomodate them.

Probably why I see so many of them with folded down ROPS that serve no purpose other than an ornament.

For some reason tractor buyers never take into account necessary clearances.

I guess living in suburbia precludes have a barn or a structure to accomodate them...

I think i"ll try and use the bucket on the floor practice. That way I won't risk damaging the trusses by locking boom in place and when going out lowering it down again. I have a concrete floor but wood to put under bucket. I will still chain it back to swing frame so it can"t slide anywhere. Thanks everyone for their imput.

There should be a hole in the boom to put a pin thru to keep the extendahoe from creeping out while not in use. As long as the floor is fairly level I wouldn't think it would swing (drift) left or right. Pin it, and set the bucket on the floor with a piece of 3/4" plywood under it should be plenty.

This would have been something i missed in 25 years " put a pin thru to keep the extendahoe". I read the manual and it talks about a hole for grease but would be wonderful to have one so it would not creep out. I will check owners manual. I have been using a hook at end of heavy chain to top of dipper to hook on front of bucket.

Agree equipment does better covered and worth the investment. Can park the backhoe in the barn breezeway but not lockable. One shed was designed for the new garden mule or horse and finishing steers. Not very useful for equipment. Machine shed for 30-50hp 2wd Massy and Fords. ROPS and cabs came decades latter. Hay making attachments had to last to justify their cost. Not much was over 7’ tall or wide. Have some low sheds that were good for older tractor attachments but too low for the current tractors. In my case modern machinery has gotten bigger. Things change and learn to adapt.
