I already ordered my 2520 and would have liked to have ordered a #46 backhoe. I had heard about the new 270 backhoe that apparently allows the mowing deck to remain in place, (I would remove the deck), but more importantly allows the deck hardware to remain in place. So I was waiting like a few others to look at the 270.

I have just gotten wind of a 3 year old #46 Backhoe on supposidly in great shape for $3,500 that was removed from a 2520. The best price I have seen so far for the #46 is $6,500 with power beyond included. I would need a power beyond for ~$500 and the bracket to onstall on the rear end. If I have it right the #46 runs about If it's true I think it might be something I should no pass up?

It's almost like my wanting to look at the new 1026R that still hasn't arrived.
I had aslo wondered if JD would discount the #46 backhoes to move them just before the new 270 arrived?

$3500 is a great price, and the PB kit should be about $300. Go for it.

Thanks Kennyd I was thinking for the little inconvenience that the install takes with removing the mower hardware and 3PH the savings were worth it.
I just called the seller and in a few hours I will take a look at it. He told me on the phone it's 3 years old, in good shape and used about 30 hours.

P.S. I know you know your JD stuff thanks!

I would take a look at the backhoe and preferably operate it also. Sounds pretty cheap.

Ok not being Backhoe knowledgeable here is what I found out in my own words!

It looked like it was in good shape to my eyes (always a good sign to me), and was equipped with the optional 13" bucket

If you look close you can see surface rust on the fittings where the hydro hoses attatch to the cylinders, and also at the end where each cylinder attaches to the main setion of the b
Backhoe.

All the pistons were without any rust, but clean and shiny, and according to the owner do not leak any fluid.

I asked to see it operate and the owner backed his tractor up to the backhoe without attaching it to the tractor just connecting the hydro hoses, and demonstrated all the Backhoe boom movements up and down left and right followed by moving the bucket. All the movements were smooth yet responsive. His tractor was not at a fast idle.

The seat is not in the picture. The owner had removed it as it interfered with his Curtis cab. He showed me the seat and all the attaching hardware that are in as new condition. He also had the safety plackard and the instruction manual.

It appears that those spots where the surface rust had formed must have originally been unpainted metal as all the pistons seemed to have it in exactly the same area. on the closed end of the cylinders.

I was thinking that some PB blaster might help me clean up those spots along with a tiny buffing wheel on a dremel followed by some fresh primer/paint.

It did not appear to have been worked to death, but unfortunately left outside hence the surface rust.

So now it's just a matter of arranging help to transpost the unit.
Which begs another very important question just how would you lift this thing onto a trailer. The seller offered to lift if using his 2520.
I believe the backhoe is 900lbs all assembled, and the 2520 can lift 1031lbs to 59" at pivot pin. I hope that means we can lift it onto low car hauler.
Not sure yet where to even hook onto the backhoe or even if we should try to dissemble some parts before loading.

Anyway It has a 13" bucket and more importantly the 2520 sub frame for my 2520. The only thing I need other than ordering the power beyond is the bracket that needs to be changed out on the rear of my yet to arrive 2520. I'll check with the dealer tomorrow AM.

I offered and he accepted $3,200. I think I made a good purchase.

wow...you did great!!! ...and with as little paint that is missing from the bucket, i would be surprised if it had more than 3 hours use, much less 30. Glad I saw these pics tho...I will not let mine set outside like that!

I also think you did VERY well. I often wonder why I don't come across deals like this. Drop the unit off to the dealer and have them put in on for you.
More importantly don't forget to get the loader arm brackets from the guy that are used to attach the front of the backhoe sub-frame to the tractor and also the two large front pins, they ain't cheap...I know.

Thanks guys. Looking forward to cleanig it up and using it.

whodat526 the power beyond kit would be a chore to take off. As I understand it most people sell the tractor and backhoe together so I feel fortunate finding a used Backhoe with the correct mount for the 2520. There are other uses for the power beyond kit for the current owner.

Gizmo yes the seller is going to remove the brackets from his tractor. I'll let the the dealer install the power beyond kit, but from what I read it shouldn't be too much off a bear to install the Backhoe myself. My biggest problem will be off loading from the trailer without a tractor loader as my 2520 hasn't arrived yet.

Somehow I'll get it done and take a lot of pictures so I will know how to put the parts/pieces back together (especially the 3PH and mower hangers). At least I know there are smart people here with answers if I have any issues. Tha's what I love about this forum

As you should. I'd be singing all day. I paid $6,500.00 for our 46BH in 2008, just sayin!

Thnaks again Gizmo2 I just returned from the dealer and added the power beyond kit to my purchase.

I don't usually find such good deals. Just kind of happpened.
The odd thing is that about a month ago I saw the ad for this same backhoe. I was hesitant to buy without having made my final tractor selection. Then just as suddenly the add disappeared so I naturally assumed that the unit had been sold. A few weeks later I ordered the 2520 and was lamenting the fact I could have saved some big money on a backhoe a few weeks prior.
That's the way it normally works for me :(.

Much to my surprise when just randomly searching ads last Wednesday I saw the same backhoe advertised. You know the rest.

I asked the seller didn't you sell this about a month ago and maybe the sale fell through? He told me he had adverized it off and on since last year originally asking $4,000. He didn't keep the ad current each cycle. So when it disappeared it was simply that he didn't ask for it to be reposted.

So my take away was even if an ad is no longer listed a call to the seller might find the item still available.

Curiosity on the end of the hydro cylinders and the fittings were I indicated the surface rust is that all unpainted on your backhoe? I was wondering what was different about those spots in particular.

Hi Smalltown,

Be sure to get ALL of the bits and pieces off of his tractor for mounting the backhoe.

I thought that I recall there being a different rear PTO guard (16 above) with the addition of the backhoe. You might want to compare the one on your tractor to his and swap it if they are different. In any case, be sure to get the mounting brackets off of his loader subframe (21-25 above).

Also, in case you don't get the owner's manual, you can view it here:

Congratulations on a great find!

ensoll thanks for the diagram, and the link. Yes he is going to remove the mounting brackets from the loader subframe.

Your diagram looks a little different just slightly from what I observed yesterday. His backhoe sub frame had two holes at the front that I assumed were for mounting on a 2520 or 2720. The hardware holding the mounting brackets to the loader sub frame seemd to have sort of square U bolt that held the lower brackets to the loader sub frame. Maybe the subframe and mounts have changed. In either case he has the 2520 right there that the #46 backhoe was removed from. I hope it's not one of those what year was your 2520 made or serial number issues :confused2:

You've got me thinking maybe JD will charge me a fortune for part 16????

/ Backhoe thoughts? #15
I think what you have is the early version of the 46 backhoe subrframe. I'm afraid I don't know anything helpful about the differences but I would definitely get that PTO guard/support from his machine. The best thing to do is to bring your machine and swap all needed parts over, then mount the backhoe and drive it onto your trailer once it is all complete.

My new 2520 hasn't arrived yet. I think he said his backhoe was 3 years old.
Yes latest diagram is exactly what I remember seeing.

People will say anything. Maybe it is, maybe it isn't. I don't know when JD switched to the new subframe. Ask your dealer. Not the sales people, ask the service manager or an experienced technician.

If you can, maybe leave a deposit on the hoe and bring your new machine to make the swap? It's also a lot easier to know where things go if you can take them off of one machine and put them right on the other.

Thanks for the info Chris. I E-mailed the dealer and asked for a price before they get part 16. If it is very expensive (something tells it will be)I will go back and ask the seller when my new 2520 arrives if I we could swap out his PTO guard for my spanking new guard.

It's about $1100. That ought to get your attention. :)

Ya that got my attention I stood right up! Doesn't seem right to ask $1,100 for a part like that. As far as I know it's not even part of the backhoe mounting kit, but ordered seperately.

As I recall the backhoe with subframe is ~$6,500
Sub frame if ordered seperaterly $900
