Stopped in today on my trip to the wilds of the Urban Kingdom. Wanted some Fluid Film. Never bought it before, so I wasn't sure where to look, not even which department. Found a guy working on a shelf and asked him ... 'Is that something for plumbing?' Uhh, no Dude, that's OK, forget it ... and I wandered off. Found an older guy in a Camo vest. They're supposed to know everything, right? Nope. Got the same deer in the headlights look, but at least he offered to look it up. Figgered he'd hit an in-store page .... Nope. Went to the general public website, then had to drill down to his store. Found the item, then the Aisle location .... back to the deer in the headlights bit ... 'where is that? Must be one of the end caps somewhere ...' So, off we go in search of something someone who works there should know. We both spotted it about the same time at the end of a tool aisle with the WD 40 and such. OK, I guess I should have looked there first, but whatever ....

On to the next item, some 14/2 Romex. Probably only need 50-75 feet, but not real sure and I like to have some extra on hand. 100 foot coil is $29 and change, 250 foot coil is $37 and change ... 150 feet more for 8 bucks more. Duh!!!!

Like 2 clients asked me to install a chain across their drives.
Say 60 ft needed in all but I looked at the price of a 100 ft roll of same chain.

Took the 100 ft home and had me 40 ft for FREE!

Many items are that way.
Take those blister packed pieces of hardware as an example.
Usually a box of 50 is same price as 2 blister packs of same hardware that contain a mere 6-7 of same nut/bolt.

Bulk works for me as I like having hardware on hand.
In fact I have lots of bin boxes for assorted hardware and rarely need to shop for some.
Makes DIY a pleasant past time.

LOL, same for tools but that is more costly.

^^ Sometimes, but not always. 3/8" flat washers were priced at .16/each for loose, but $3.45 per bag of 25. I needed 16 which would have been 2.56; not as big of a differnce, but still. I've seen others items that are exactly the same price per 'unit', no matter the size of package.

I have been buying in bulk quantities for years but lately I've been thinking about backing off a bit otherwise I'll need to build another barn soon

I've been doing that for a loooong while, and I am nearly 80 years old.
My children are going to have a lot of ... stuff....to deal with!

Never seems to fail, whatever I'm looking for doesn't seem to exist in the 50/100 boxes, only the little plastic bags. It's not like I'm looking for something oddball or anything, more along the line of 10x 1/2" pan head sheet metal screws or something like that.
Never ceases to amaze me...a 150' long hardware aisle and they don't have what you're looking for.

At one time we had a real nuts and bolts (called themselves a fastener store) and we could get reasonable quantities but they merged and now minimum is 100 (of anything) and $10.00.
Now, who needs 100 3/4" X 4" fine thread bolts grade 10? (example).

Friend wanted spare shear bolts for his blower, now he has a lifetime supply!

Most of the big box stores carry a fairly good variety of package sizes for the common nuts, bolts, and screws. The problem is how they are arranged and finding them, since many times the brands differ between package sizes. My local Ace hardware has the best arrangement using the plastic slide out trays. They keep the extra stock boxes of hardware stuck in behind the open individual piece trays. Slide out a tray and verify that's the screw you want... then either pick individual screws from the bin or grab the bulk box from behind it (which saves you a ton).

Put an order together overnight to pick up today along with one I had placed last week. Forgot a few things and needed to add on. One thing was wasp spray ... the two packs they always have on floor display. Check the website and it showed unavailable. They had the single cans, but not the two packs. I figured OK, another casualty of the mad rush. Ordered the single can. Get to the store and decide to check ... large floor display of the two packs right by the Service Desk where I was getting the pick up order. Pick one up and hand it to the clerk to check stock. She scans it looks at the screen and sighs ... ' it says negative 14 ' .... I point to the display of 10 cases ... all she can do is shake her head ... 'we'll make the Manager aware of it'.

Same exact thing happened a couple of weeks ago with a different item.
