What Satellite & Cable Companies are doing as a Result of Cord Cutting

Only available high speed in my area was Eastlink, they had the monopoly, $95 a month for just internet, 95-100mbps download speed and a modem. New company came into the area, Purple Cow and bought bandwidth on their lines now paying $60 a month and also included a wireless router/modem. Now my download speeds are up to 130mbps and saving $35 a month.
So if they're making money at $60 a month and have to pay for bandwidth from another company , how much is Eastlink making?..............Mike

That is interesting, but why would Eastlink sell bandwidth on lines they have captive customers on? Not doubting you, just wonder why.

I think it was a recently passed law they had to, I'm sure if there was a way they wouldn't have to they wouldn't................Mike

Never heard of them, are they the local phone company? If so, they may be classified as a common carrier which means they have to make their infrastructure available to wholesale buyers. For some reason the cable companies have managed to avoid being so classified.

Anybody hear what DirecTV (aka AT&T) has done regarding CBS local channel? Yesterday (9/27 5 p.m. ET) was the day AT&T was threatening to remove that channel due to stalled negotiations with Sinclair Broadcast Group. The channel is still on so, did they reach a deal?

Direct, Dish both have done the same thing every few years. Last time CBS and Dish had the I went and paid for CBS all access. Soon as it came back I stopped all access. They even ask why, funny

Didn't know that DISH plays the same games, thanks for the info. I researched CBS All Access as a backup plan a few days ago in case DirecTV dropped our Channel 12 WKRC Cincinnati. CBS All Access is $5.99/mo with commercials and $9.99/mo without. Agree that would be a good short term solution. Also researched OTA antennas and found one on Amazon that claims a 200 mile range WOW! If true that would be a big plus for cancelling DirecTV (as hundreds of thousands have done recently).

You are not going to get 200 mile range, 60 would be good.

I'm lucky to get 30+ with mine.

I agree. I bought one off those cheapies just to test what channels I might receive. The amplifier got hot and melted and I junked it, but it indicated that I could get some decent channels. The Channel Master antenna I put in for the permanent install is much better. When it comes to antennas, size matters.
