man that's alot of labor to turn a dran plug and pour a jug in, hit a couple grease fittings, wipe a dip stick and all.

Like I said.. oil had '$money$' in it...

I hope they spent time (with a torque wrench) checking every accessible bolt and nut including the wheel lugs.. you've seen the " my tractor broke" threads.., should also check the wire harnesses that are exposed to the elements and applying dielectric grease where it's called for. A good service tech does all he/she's suppose to... plus, and doesn't rush through it.. a good mechanic is a treasure for the machines he services, and for the shop owner he works for.

Beside Chris.. not everyone is as tractor savvy as you. :D

I would imagine there is over $200 in UDT and engine oil. Probably over $300 if SUDT was used.

$178 just for Kubota UDT. I had the inner, and outer air filters changed, fuel filter, and eng oil. $239. 89 for parts/oil, 2 hours 50 minutes labor @ $65 per hr Total of $162.50 and $8.12 shop fees. tax was $29.90. Total was $440.41. I have seen quite a few postings on this site talking about $600-$700 for a first service. not to mention I live about 90 miles from NYC, which drives up the costs for everything.

I'm not saying thay charged too much.. I'm just saying I think i mighta saved the 162.50 labor, 8.12 shop fee, and whatever portion of the tax that went with those.. and just bought hte oil and filters and put them on myself... ( probably used a cheaper oil too )..

just seems like alot to pay to let someone else pull a drain plug out, dump in some jugs of oil.. wipe a dip stick and make a couple arm motions with a grease gun on some exposed zerks.. that's all.

guess I'm cheap?

A large part of owning a tractor - in my case - is working with it and on it!

While going thru the arm motions of "draining, dumping and grease gunning" I'm lookin' for anything that's loose, bent, cracked, rubbin' or likely to fail - BEFORE - it actually does.

(And of course... I'm cheap!) :D

I heard that. looking at loose fastemers.. chafing hoses.. crud buildup where a leak may be.. etc.. etc.. I'm a firm believer in doing my own maintenance wherever possible.

here's the deal. I had a hydraulic line that was leaking. I did not know how bad the fix was. I had every intention of doing the first service myself. That is why I had the filters in the first place. Since I did not know, at the time how tough the fix was going to be I decided to take it to the dealer. Since fixing the line was going to involve draining all the hydraulic fluid, and since the machine had reached the 50 hour mark, I decided that it would be more efficient to have the dealer do the service. As it turned out the dealer was able to fix the leak, and write it up as a warranty repair, even though it was out of warranty. What was I supposed to do? Do the service before the leak was fixed? Do it after the leak was fixed? Why would I do that since the fluid had to be replaced anyway? By having the dealer do the service,I have a record of the service, in his database, and they are responsible for any problems that might come up, as a result. I also go over my tractor with a fine tooth comb. That is how I spotted the leak, right away in the first place. I don't like throwing money down a hole any more than the next guy. In this case, since I did not have to pay for the repair on the leak, and because I was going to have to pay for the hydro fluid regardless, I feel I made to right choice, in having the dealer do the service. PS, It was a small bone to throw to the service manager, seeing how he did not have to warantee the repair, on the leak.

whatever makes you feel comfortable is the correct answer. I just told you what I'da done.. :)

that 'warranty' word is alien to me.. nothing I own has had a warranty in quite a looooooooooong time.. :)
