When I installed my barbed wire fence ( 1.5 miles ) I knew I would need about 26 rolls of new barbed wire. One roll = 1320 feet. The dealer gave me a deal on a particular brand. Red Shank - Ever Sharp. I found out why when installing the first roll.

The barbs are sharper than razors and never get dull. They are just as sharp today as when they were installed fourty years ago. You slip as you snake your way thru my fence - a sliced pair of jeans will be the least of your concerns.

If I ever need to roll up some of this wire - it will definitely require some form of machine system.

Wow, sounds like something to wrap you house with when the zombies get loose.

Many years ago I built a 4 strand barbed wire fence in the summer months. I pulled every strand but tight. Come winter the wire started breaking as the temperature shortened the runs.

To heck with wrapping the house. I stop them at the property line. I've only had wire breakage of one type. Hungry cows pushing thru the strands. I see their point though. Their side is gnawed down to the dirt - my side is still green and lush.

However - this is how it usually happens. Just after spring calving and the young-uns and their moms have been turned out to pasture. The young ones sneak UNDER the fence and have a grand 'ol time. Romping and frolicking without mom's watchful eye. Mom has finally had enough. The young ARE NOT listening to her telling them to come back. And they are getting further and further from the fence. Mom will push between the strands and damn well get the young back where they belong.

You want to see a look of SURPRISE. When the young realize that Mom is on the same side of the fence as they are. And she is NOT happy to be there.
