I envy you, I love the history and appreciate the real work that went into all the original craftsmanship that it takes to build and restore anything!!
Where I live the property was a farm sold into lots between 3-13 acres,But there was the main farm house which dates back to 1740 and it had an addition put on in 1909. When the ambitious new owners took posession it was a "Money Pit" from buckled old growth heart pine floors crumbling plaser leaking plumbing and roof,not to mention snake infested /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
But after 5 years of restoring it is a beautiful piece of history complete down to original doorknobs and window locks,wave glass in the window panes,you should see the floors!!!
Needless to say I was awestruck awesome beautiful, So you keep up the good work!!
Maybe you could check with the state about a historical preservation society that could possibly connect you with others that would offer advice and possibly help in the restoration process upto sourcing supplies or extra labor for the sake of doing it the way it used to be done?

Here's the latest from yestedays labor and a picture of the monster used to lift the beams. It's raining today and I get a day off.

Here is a picture from the top of our field at the farm. The barn is 60 feet long and that will give you an idea of the size of the house. The main part of the house is on the left. The next section has the second kitchen, a bathroom, spare room upstairs with the boiler room, coal bins down under ground level and a walkthru to the workshop/garage area. The workshop is upstairs if the front half of the building. The rear half is a storage area. First floor front was used for chickens or other small animals and storage. The rear part of the first floor is a garage area/shop. Under the garage is another chicken coop/storage area where my daughter keeps her feathered friends that I take care of while she is in college.

Are you going to put the wood back on the outside or go with steel? We did the inside all in wood but them put steel on the outside.

The barn will be all wood. The left side and rear are already done. The problem we have around here with metal is moisture buildup. That is not good between the steel and wood.

We put stringers up, 2x4's, over the outside of the barn to screw the tin to. This helped to strengthen up the barn, 120 years old, and it eliminates the moisture build-up.

Now that is a smart idea. I am using 2x4's between the beams as studs to attach plywood to the barn. Then the barn will get covered with pine or hemlock boards that are shiplapped. Hopefully this will eliminate the pulling out of nails.

Here is the latest pictures of the barn. The new rafters 22' red pine are all in place and the new pearling is installed in the torn down section. Tomorrow the roof boards are going up and the shingles will finally get started. These pictures are from yesterday. Today we put up a few new boards and I tore off all the other old shingles on this side of the barn. It is finally starting to look good again after many years of neglect. We are useing lifetime warranty architecual shingles on the roof. I couldn't find any no tab shingles and had to spend the bucks for these. We have high winds on this north side that tear 3 tab shingles off like paper. Boy am I happy now to see this much done. It has been a very long road to get to here and quite a bit of money. I also bought new full 2" thick oak boards for the first floor so I can put a lot of weight in there if neccessary.
