I have a 160 amp 12 volt alternator on an old Crossley single cylinder Diesel engine for our house battery charging system . A friend of mine made up a little box with 3 switches and a series of diodes that replaces the regulator . It is there to trick the alternator into thinking the batteries are still flat , when the batteries charge comes up , I flick one of the switches which puts the load back on the alternator . I keep doing this until the batteries are fully charged and are lightly gassing . The point of this post is , can this be done in reverse to limit the amount of charge going into these tractor batteries ? It does seem like the regulators on these engines are set a bit high for a vehicle without all the lights and accessories that a car has and do little night driving .
