Battery Boiling Over

I'll check the voltage now that it is fully charged.

I'll look into that victor charger and see if I can make it work with the alternator I have or if I need to get a new one.

This is the URL to Victor Vector Smart Battery Charger-car smart battery charger . Victor has many models, the VEC 1097A has a Float Charge feature, you may select charging profiles for "vented-wet", AGM and Gel cell batteries. The charger will display the charging current and voltage; test the battery for opens and shorts, test alternators. Since you have many batteries this may be the charger of choice.

Victor also has a Hot Line to call or e-mail for battery help that may help you.

You could put a 50A+ diode in the line that the alt uses to charge the batt, and sense batt voltage on the alt side of the diode. This will keep your batt V 0.5 to 0.7 below the voltage of the alt. :)

I though of the same Larry and put it aside.
Question; dose the op have the necessary skills to install the diode safely? I think a better choice would be to replace the Alternator with one that produces the correct voltage range.

So Haymaker, yes, I am giving Optima a "shameless plug." I'd even go so far as to say that I am their champion happy customer. I think your post was well-meaning, but a bit of a "drive-by" response of a new member who has not read the volumes of information on this problem in the New Holland forums. That's okay! You are aware of this now. The idea of not fixing the symptoms is one that I also champion. If this were not a real solution, I wouldn't post it. I can say with full confidence that the Optima battery will fix this problem. Are there other solutions? Probably, but I am going with what I know best.:)

No, no insult meant. YOU just gave the info that many should have come up with or researched before beginning to re-engineer. I did not have the info, thus was merely giving an opinion based on my belief of what is one of the basic rules of good troubleshooting. Start at the beginning of the problem before coming up with an end result. If you want to stop a bush from groing on your lawn, you don't cut the top off and then wonder why it keeps growing back, you cut off the roots and fix it once and for all.

That said, if the issue is a design flaw and not easily fixed, then I'd say buy one of those plastic battery trays they sell.

That said, I will drift a bit. Is the Optima a sealed unit? Gel? If gel, I wonder if "optimum" charging requirements are different than the average system?

The Optima is a Sealed Lead-Acid (SLA) battery using Asorption Glass Mat (AGM) technology. There are dry compound batteries and other SLAs, but the Optima has gained wide acceptance as a fine product. Here is a link to the Optima website for more info.

Here is more info on AGM batteries.

Odyssey Batteries are also popular and have been installed by some TBN members.

There are tons of battery/charger sites, enough to make your head explode. Yes the optima is sealed.

replace the Alternator with one that produces the correct voltage range.

Now that is a good idea!:thumbsup::thumbsup:

Well I've got the acid stains and rust all scraped off. I've primed and painted the rusted parts and have a battery box in which to install the battery. Now I just need to decide whether or not to re-engineer the charging system try to trade for an Optima battery or just leave it add the battery box and replace the battery every four years.

I'd make a secondary containment box and line it with EPDM that is acid resistant, Id provide a vent cover/catch hood where it would allow any boil over to be contained within the box. I'll make sure I do not have any holes in the epdm by making up some clip system to attach it to the containment box. I use the new battery till it dies and will then replace it with an Optima. If I can get good credit for the return (90% of original purchase price) then I'll trade it in for Optima now.

Jim's word is as good as it gets.

Have you found the cause as to why it did it ? That is first priority .
