Bear attack in AZ

Never mind Cougar, a smelt has more rights in Komi than any tax paying human being.

That was 2007. Both the farms and the fish are fine. If they wipe out the fish, the farms will still run short of water, but there will never be any more fish. File a federal crop insurance Prevent Plant claim and pray for rain.

I think that a little levity is appropriate...

1: Oh, so you're saying the politicians intelligence level has greatly increased since 2007 then, that's good to know (however it's false, and getting worse, the chocolate milk issue was today, small gas engine ban is current and I didn't even mention all the nice modern diesel trucks being dumped on Craigslist currently simply cus Kommi DMV refuses to renew their registration, California New 2020 Law Limits Registration of Older Diesel Trucks, Call 408-263-7300).

2: For all you know the farms could have gone bankrupt and been bought up and yes may be running today but at what personal, familial and financial cost previously. (unless you know personally every farmer affected your statements is without merit.

3: Interesting, the only use of that type analogy was related to buying land, they're not making any more of it.... but apparently even the fish are messed up in Cali as apparently they no longer breed, good to know. It's worth noting that the average life of a rainbow smelt is under 3 years, the average life of an affected farmer and all the customers who paid higher prices due to the limited crop runs is between 80-100 years of age. Rainbow Smelt (Estuaries.NOAA.gov) · iNaturalist

4: Some farmers farm for the passion and supplying the country food and sustenance, I doubt any of them when asked in school replied "when I grow up I want to file insurance claims for a living".

That story was from 15 years ago.
What's your point, it doesn't make it any less ridiculous, here, you want something more current (PS: THAT story may have been from 2007 but the smelt have reined king in Cali every year since then.

I present to you...... (it's a good year, I mean century to be a smelt in Cali).

As you read all the search results for this topic you see time and time again comments about the smelt, the impact to them, what happens if they don't have babies, what would a smelt free world be like to live in... but not a single mention of the farmers, grocers, customers, families etc..... says it all right there I reckon.

I have a lot of deer, and if there is a cougar working the area the dogs will start bringing back kill remnants. When that happens, I strap on a .357. I load FBI rounds, 158 gr. JHP. That's enough to discourage anything I might encounter, and I'm a pretty good shot. I've never had to use it.
Can the cougars read the stamping on the casing or do you have to yell out that they're FBI 158 grain's (wasn't aware the FBI started reloading/making available their own brand of ammo) to discourage them as you put it, just curious....(I'm just playing with you). :) Federal did make a 158 grain +P in a 38 at one point however. Cheap 38 Special Ammo For Sale - 158 gr +P LSWCHP Federal Law Enforcement Ammunition In Stock - 5f0 rounds

PS: After the Miami shootout and resulting creation of the 357Sig, they've recently gone back to +P 9mm in a G19 as their issue duty weapon, and some carry .40's, FBI can carry what they qualify on). If you see an FBI agent yielding a wheel gun, in 357 or any caliber for that matter, he's retired and LONG AGO retired, watch his sight alignment, he may be pointing towards you and not even know it. LOL

The .357 SIG is a bottlenecked, high-velocity handgun cartridge designed by a collaboration between SIG Sauer and Federal Ammunition Company in 1994. This came about, much in the same fashion as the .40 Smith and Wesson, as a response to the "poor performance" of 9mm Luger LE loads of the time. Much of this "need" for more effective new handgun cartridges stemmed from the 1986 FBI shootout in Miami, involving two bank robbers and multiple (outgunned) FBI agents. The firearms used were Smith and Wesson Model 13 .357 Magnum revolvers (loaded with .38 Special ammunition) and primarily Smith and Wesson 9mm semi-automatic handguns loaded with Winchester’s 9mm Silvertip 115-grain JHP load.

Like I said, I'm just having fun... thanks for your posting, i agree... if I go into the woods, I sure as heck am not taking a .380, the bigger the hole, the quicker they bleed out.

I'll have to ask my friend in the FBI what he carries. I use a 9mm G17. If I know I have a problem critter, I am carrying my Beretta A400 12g semi with the G17 has backup.

My age is showing. The FBI has long since gone to autoloaders. The 158 gr. JHP was 30 years ago. It's still a very capable supersonic load that hits hard. A shotgun is for hunting, not for field work. If I'm going to carry, I want the gun on me, not parked in the pickup because I need both hands free.

A .38 spl is a popgun, nice for plinking and target practice, but not very useful if you have to actually shoot something. The 9mm Luger is a little hotter, about equivalent to a .38 +P. The .357 Sig was an attempt to match .357 S&W performance in a rimless cartridge that would feed in an autoloader. I have a .44 magnum too, but the .357 is my go-to gun if I want to hit what I am shooting at. The guy in the video was too freaked to stand still and aim his shotgun, much less take follow-up shots.

My point is that you don't own the water, so you can stand in line like everybody else, including the wildlife.

Bear has ransacked the cabin several times and severed the propane tank line twice.

The only thing the city police said is do not hurt or harass the bear or I will be cited.

Hank hit my place 4 times…

Took out propane twice and twice through the front door…

Law enforcement said whatever I do do not harass the bear or I will face legal consequences…

and yes the story of the 3 bears is true… bear slept on bed in both bedrooms…

Can’t make this stuff up.

Our neighbor in Northern CA was away for a significant time with medical issues. They had bear intrusions into their home and it was substantially wrecked.

What it is hard to fathom is why is the victim often the bad guy…

The Police explanation is we are in their habitat…???

I wonder if police would offer the same dismissal to Native Americans?

Every occurrence was within the 5k deductible so the suggestion to let insurance take care of it does not apply.

They say we have black bears - 40+ years and I've never seen any sign. Cougars - that's a whole different story. I've lost many barn cats to cougars. Hunters bagged a really big one - five miles west of my place. It's an area where several have been killed.

I DO NOT wander out and around my place after dark. That's one reason I'm still here after 40 years.

Too many people do not realize how powerful a medium sized black bear is. That's why so many tourists are lost to black bears in Alaska. The need to get a really close up picture with a tourist is not one of the bears priorities.

A guy I worked with lived in a remote Alaska settlement and he explained not leaving the house unarmed...

I said crime as the first thing popping into my head... he said no... Bears.

This discussion has me thinking since the Lake Tahoe police saying shooting a bear is a good way to get yourself killed or incarcerated... why does everyone in my friends part of Alaska carry handguns for bear if all it does is upset the 4 foot and 2 foot variety of bear???

The are not carrying rifles or hunting rifles... just handguns and I don't know the size.

/ Bear attack in AZ #98
I guess if I was preparing for a potential bear attack while going about normal 'life' (as opposed to hunting for bear), I would carry a handgun, too.

Not everyone is the Rifleman (tm) and can quickly and accurately fire from the hip. Not to mention, carrying the rifle takes away from the ability to do use your hands to work. You could sling the rifle, but the reaction time is not going to work in your favor.

If the people living the life are doing it a certain way, there is usually a reason (often born of tragedy or necessity).

That's Disney logic... wildlife doesn't say "This is my land, that is yours" Rather, they look for 3 things; food, water and a safe place to shelter . If they can get the first two without danger they can find the last.

I've had the opportunity to meet/greet black bears in Alaska two times. I lived in Alaska - 1960 thru 1982. Thank God I was carrying a 12 gauge and buck shot. Not some STINKING handgun. I had to put the bears DOWN - not irritate them.

Bears don't necessarily like handguns. But they will chew them up - along with the person holding it.

Folks who think they can put down a charging bear with a handgun are the same people who would go rhino hunting with a sling shot.

If you insist on going into bear country and carry a handgun for protection - just be sure you have your affairs in order before you go.
