I‘d dump the cabin. Who want to live somewhere you can’t shoot a bear that breaks into your cabin and you can’t turn your own propane tank.

Was not always that way… a permit was as simple as sending a sketch to the county with a 10 dollar fee.

Only inspection was assessor who visited to verify what was built resembled plans…

No single inspection for seasonal private cabin and county seat was down the mountain in Placerville.

Boy have things changed

Sorry for the pain. I would follow up with F&G your officer might just be a leader in the save the bears group. A bear around a residence is bad news, too many chances to surprise them, or get tangled with a cub. You should be able to protect your property and safety, especially if animal control doesn't relocate the darn things.

Sadly, what happens in CA is often a prequil for the rest of the country.

My friend, Darcy Staver was killed by a small Black Bear in 1992 just right up the road from me. She was very athletic but was no match for that bear that actively stalked and killed her. Very sad.

Aggressive bears need to be dead or relocated.

Sorry for your friend, Not saying it was the case but something to note is woman's in their PMS have to be carful around wild life, they emit a sent that can be smell for miles ...

Im having a hard time understanding the thinking it's ok for a bear to damage property because it's just nature...

My Tahoe city has 30 documented Black Bears roaming city streets and an entire Protect the Bears non-profit advocating on their behalf.

The conventional wisdom is this is the time of year Black Bears look for a comfortable place to winter... making an unoccupied home attractive.

Have a neighbor a few streets over issued a depreciation permit after one of his horses attacked by a mountain lion on its flank...

Maybe because a horse is livestock???

Sounds like "protect the bears" needs to be held responsible for any damage the bears they are protecting may cause.

Who's responsible if those bears attack, injure, or kill someone.

For all you guys who think you are not food to a bear , you need to start watching scary bear attacks on you tube, Lots of people have been eaten , Especially by black bears, My sister and her family live in washinton state and they are all trying to get out because of stupid laws just like california .

Everyone thinks the brown bear is predatory, they can be but black bears I never put up with. Only thing worse than a black bear is a stirred up moose.

I had a similar problem years ago. Bear destroyed everything on my property it could. Leveled 2 out buildings. Bear wasn’t scared of me at all, I tried everything. Wildlife officer said I couldn’t do anything about property damage. I will tell you what works 100% every single time. Buy ammonia in a gallon an pour it around all over. Bear will never come back. Every time you are there pour more. worse thing to do is fill a balloon with ammonia and rub bacon grease on the outside and hang it up. Bear Will hit that ballon and burst it. No more bears around ever.

Sorry to hear that as Ive been planning my move to western WA for almost 20 years...

When I bought the rules were totally different... had 3 homesites but now could not build what I have...

That is why there are so many black bear "incidents" in AK. Everybody knows that cute black bear can't/won't hurt you - WRONG. A 170# black bear can tear you apart like a rag doll.

The other problem that folks create for themselves. Walking down a trail - being as quiet as possible - enjoying nature and all its sounds. You rudely awaken a bear( black, brown, grizzly ) sleeping in the nearby bushes. Chances are it WILL attack.

When in bear country we had one person whose responsibility was to "make noise". Let the bears know we are there, as we all walk down the trail and allow them to silently slip away. Most times - beat on a large frying pan with a stick.

I know this sounds crazy - but it DOES work. They will silently move off 30 yards or so. Then stand up to see what in the hell is going on.

yeah it happen pretty rare but it dose happen ... I know two resent incident where people got killed by a black bear and one of them the bear had the intention to eat him ... first incident not clear what that individual was doing but he got attack by a black bear, got drag some length from the incident and got partially buried, (stashed for a later snack) ... the other incident a old man was blue berry picking and got attack, mauled and killed by a bear ...

We see this disconnect form ''city people'' like the one judge in southern Ontario who sentence a man for killing a black bear that was in his yard, the judge said ''you just killed winnie the pooh'' if that's not a disconnect I don't know what is...

I don't agree to kill any bear at sight but trouble juvenile bear should be relocated and adult bear that wonder in town or if they are a threat to you, your family or your property should be dealt with ....in the wild its kill or be kill so if someone think he is above that he is pretty oblivious.

Neighbor that heard noise saw bear coming out... residential lots with 5' side setback

Said almost always unoccupied and getting much worse.

Trash is in bear proof containers so that supply greatly reduced...
