The 737 jet took off without incident, headed for Tulsa.

Oh, with different pilots at the controls though.

Probably a car dealer fly'n the plane, so see how it all ties together:D

Actually, Thanks every one for contributing you're input and stories, makes for some good "read'n" and education for the "next time"..Dont know why a dealer would avoid because of "all the negativity":confused3: I would encourage the input, it is an industry that has done this to take advantage of naive, tired, uninformed buyers. I also know all dealers are not like the horror story's, but conceded they are very few. I personally have no animosity towards a dealer that can add some input to this conversation.

Western,
I'm not avoiding this discussion, actually if you look back I think you will find I contributed a number of posts in response to the thread. What I said was that I bowed out for a while due to all the negativity.
I believe I made my points that yes, I'm sure there are some unscrupulous car dealer out there, as well as in any other high ticket sales; but there are also plenty of professional people out there as well, who appreciate the opportunity to EARN your business.

My best advice to anyone shopping for a vehicle are the following:

1. Think about your wants and needs before you go shopping (this can shorten the process of settling on the right vehicle)
2. Know your budget (don't be afraid to let the salesperson know your requirements) I don't want to fall in love with something only to find out its way out of my budget ( time wasted)
3. Do some homework ( it's easy enough to get a good idea on pricing before hand) You cannot by a Lexus with a Chevy budget.
4. Check your Credit Standing (don't be upset with the dealership if you're there all day waiting for a credit approval on your 500 credit score.)
5. Have a REALISTIC expectation on your trade. Just because you've seen one listed for sale for xx $, doesn't mean thats what its worth, it costs $$ to recondition.

In 1968, the Plymouth Roadrunner was new and as I drove by a dealership in Oak Cliff (southern part of Dallas, for you non-Texans) I saw my first one on a dealer's lot. I stopped, went in, offered the keys to my 2 year old Ford to a salesman, and told him I'd like to know how much difference you'd have to have to trade. That idiot asked, "Well, how much would you give?" I said, "Nope, that ain't the way it works. You get mine appraised and tell me your price, and then I'll tell you whether I'll take it or not." And he said, "Well, if you don't know how much you'd give, there's no use in me getting your trade-in appraised." I said, "OK" and walked out, drove straight across Dallas to another Plymouth dealer on the north side of Dallas, went in, and told a salesman I was looking for a Roadrunner (I had read a good bit about them in some magazines). He told me they didn't have one and didn't think there were any in Dallas yet. I told him I knew where there was one in Dallas, and where it was. He said he didn't think a dealer that had one would dealer transfer it, but he got my Ford appraised, we agreed on a price, if he could find one equipped the way I wanted, and they called the first dealer who agreed to dealer transfer it, and the salesman from the second dealership and I went after it. He asked that I wait out of sight while he went in and got the keys for the Roadrunner.

I always kind of regretted that first idiot not knowing about the sale that his stupidity lost.
Should have went in with him..

Never trade in a car, that's my rule. It adds a complication to the deal, I want to know exactly how much I will be paying.
Getting rid of the old car is what Craigslist is for.

And I always pay cash. My wife said in 1968 she didn't want to make any more payments and that's how it's been since then. We've saved a bundle of interest $$ by not making payments. OTOH, the first new vehicle we bought was a '91, but we could afford to pay cash because we hadn't made payments for several decades.

There are two parts of the experience that really turn me off. First, the salesman has not been given a bottom line selling price and any offers have to be taken by the salesman to a secret decision maker. This way the dealership avoids back and forth negotiating I guess, for most people. The other thing I hate is the business office where it takes forever to do the paperwork, they try to sell you an extended warranty, etc.

Something else I hate are dealer added options that are ridiculously priced. Some dealerships they are on every car and can't be removed. I just say no, not paying for that.
