You are a lucky man. The 790 and now 3005 is probably the most efficent and least problematic gear tractor around. I have a 790 with loader & backhoe and, if I could not replace it, would never sell. You will be amazed at how much power is packed in it and how well you can wiggle into tight spaces. I can't recall ever seeing a bad word written on them.

The dog sure looks comfortable. Glad to see it next to the stove. If a female and you one day desire pups, sell them before the wife gets attached to them.

Thanks Sixdogs yes I like the 790/3005 as well! As for the dogs, they are all neutered and spayed so no danger of pups!! Enough unwanted dogs as it is!!!!

Nice pics of a fine tractor. You mentioned the clip for clutch storage. Thanks, I have been wondering what that U was for ever since I got my 790.

Perhaps you could answer something else for me. In a separate thread someone said the 3005 has a beefed up, stronger front axle than the 790. Is this true? I can not find any internet photos of the 3005 front axle to compare to the 790.

Nice looking tractor! I also like your woodstove... what is the canister looking thing on the ROPS? First Aid kit?

As i've been told the canister is great for Ice & Budweiser.... Or a rolled up girlie magazine (No Ice)

Just a few pics of my 3005.

Fred,
I am real close to purchasing a JD 3005 and wanted to ask if you feel the need for the ballast box while using your loader. I plan to have the rear tires filled and try and make do without the box. Have you used yours enough yet to offer some advice? By the way, that's a lot of snow!!!

I have a 790 with the rears filled and a 5ft box blade on the back that weights 430 lbs and if I fill the bucket it feels like I need all that weight. I'm not an expert on FELs but I think you need some weight behind the rear wheels. My FEL manual is at work but I think it calls for more weight than I have.

Beautiful tractor Fred.

Hey dirt, so little difference in the axles I had to put them side by side to tell.

Check it out.

Thanks for taking time to post the front axle pics Fred. Willl, good job on the side by side view. Looks like the 2005's outer hubs are beefed up a little.

Welcome to TBN:D

Here is my opinion, backed up with a little facts from the manual: Filled tires are NOT a substitute for ballast on your 3PH. My manual for the FEL specifies ballasting options very specifically. To get maximum lift from the loader, and keep from damaging the tractor, you will need something on your 3PH...for me the ballast box works good because it is small and compact, and filled with Portland cement weighs about 700-800lbs.

Thanks to all for your advice on FEL with ballast box. I'll probably invest in a ballast box.
