There was a guy who was re-purposing a 6gpm or so OC setup. IIRC his res was 6-8 gal and fluid got hot w/o operating any cylinders.
Seems he'd added a pressure gauge between pump and stack, but plumbed it into 1/2" lines using a 3/8" tee. I never got over thinking he'd placed an unnecessary 'throttle' in a 'worst' possible place.
Gauge pressure seemed as expected, but that says nothing about flow beyond the narrow Tee. I'd expect a considerable amount of oil was going through the relief valve adding to the heat.
