So does anyone know what kind of bearings are on my 1850 Rough Cut mower? I have to take the spindles out this winter cause the factory put the spare bolts on the inside and not the outside...

Not to hijack the thread, but...

If the bolts are really supposed to be "spares", wouldn't save a whole lot of pain and agony, if the holes had allen screws in them, and the spare bolts were in an envelope on your workbench?

Just sign me confused....

I am the 3rd owner of this 2003 PT-422.

But my guess would be it was not lubed as often as it should have been.

(my guess to post #38)

For what it might be worth, here's what I found when I took a spindle apart on my 1845 rough cut mower. Maybe it's similar to your 1850 mower.

I took this spindle apart thinking I had a bearing failure (there was a lot of axial play in the spindle). There is probably 500 - 600 pretty tough hours on the mower and I really expected trouble but everything was fine. I cleaned it all up, put in some new grease and a new seal (backwards I realized later!), adjusted the play out and called it good.

Several times now I've found a whole spindle assembly flopping around on loose mounting bolts. Power-Trac in it's infinite wisdom mounted these spindles with tapered lug nuts in straight drilled holes so I could get that sinking bearing-gone-bad feeling on a regular basis.

You know, looking at that exploded view, it looks very similar to the 48" brush cutter for the PT400 series that I have. I wonder what car or light truck that hub is from? :)

`I sure didn't know that blade assembly was made from an auto hub. That's why you have the tapered bolts. You could just replace the bolts with grade 8 bolts .

Finally figured out the problem with the Fan on the oil cooler. (guess I should have made two separate posts, 1 for spindles, and 1 for fan)

I called Terry at PT and basically he went over everything that I tried already.
But he said to start at different points in the wiring and take a jumper to the PT's head lights to see if there was enough amps to turn them on.

If you all remember I was getting over 12volts everwhere I measured.

Well the culprit was in the wiring harness, underneath the thick rubber covering.

The source wire that connects to the Thermal Relay goes into the wiring harness and is jumpered with a connector to a larger source wire in the harness.

That was the bad connection. (If you ask me, there are too many connectors.)

The fan is running properly now. Praise The Lord!

Now back to the middle spindle.

The bearings on the middle spindle are completely gone. So I will have to call Keith at PT and see if he has the correct dimensions.

I will try to get them local if possible.

Congratulations on finding the problem!

If you are having poor connection problems, you may want to go through each connector in your wiring, open it up, clean the contacts (with a pencil eraser or fine sandpaper), coat it with dielectric grease and reassemble. It is a pain in the popo, but you will find the corroded, loose, arcing, and mis-crimped connections. Of course, you can just cut off the old ones and put on new ones, if you have enough wire...

I'm a big fan of the crimp on wire connectors that have a heat liquifing sealant in them, aka "adhesive lined heat shrink connectors". After you crimp them on the wire, you heat it up, like heat shrink tubing, and they both shrink and force a liquid glue around the wire and insulation. They are great for wire connections out in the weather, like the PT wiring. There is also a version that has low temperature solder that melts in to make a great electrical connection. I get them from Del City, but West Marine and others sell the Ancor brand.

Good luck on the spindle bearings!

All the best,

Peter

Peter,

Thanks for the advice / info on the connectors.

I think that sounds like a good way to go, even if it is a
'pain in the popo' ;~)

I ordered the bearings from Keith today and hopefully it won't take too long for them to get here.

Once that is taken care of I should be pretty set for awhile.

Thanks again, and thanks to everyone for all your help and input.

I would think that all the bearings are the same, and the middle spindle is just longer to hold two pulleys. The bearing number is usually stamped on the edge of the bearing. If you get the bearings from PT, write the bearing number down for future reference.
