This seems to be a kind of hit-or-miss thing to me. Mine has no protectors on them, R4s, and others do. Some are half circle, and I think I've seen some in circles.

I'm not going to push fate by having any welded on. That's when I'll manage to get a stick right into one! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I've got half circles front and rear on the R4s. Though the front stems are rubber and the rears are metal.

Does anyone know if you can weld those little half circle stem protectors onto a fluid loaded rim without removing it first? That is can the protectors be added while the tire is on the tractor or does it need to be disassembled to avoid problems with welding heat etc?

It can be done with the tire on. The weld may not get the penetration that it would on a bare metal rim but this is not a critical item. If it breaks off, then you're just back to OEM protection.
