I'd also have to say a 12 Guage Pump. If I'm gonna beat it up, Mossburg (cheap) will do. For protection, you should never have to shoot an intruder. Shucking a round in a pump shotgun is the most intimidating sound in the world!

I do not want to appear to sound too inquisitive, but I think that it would be pertinent to supplying an answer to your question, if we knew more in regards to your familiarity with firearms. Have you or your Wife ever participated in shooting shotguns, semi-auto's, revolvers or various rifles? Have you ever hunted? Perhaps this info might aid us in supplying a more definitive answer to your question, in regards to suggesting the adequate weapon. Just a thought. Thanks.

I agree with your post, and would also like to add that, as a Firearms safety and shooting instructor, as well as a certified IHEA Educator. I see more and more newcomers every year esp. Around deer season. Male and female ages 10-80 .with our ever evolving world (and world of firearms themselves) alot of folks are looking for an upper hand in personal defense, as well as the ones like myself who were born after 1976 are required by law to take and pass a hunters safety course in order to obtain a legal hunting permit .since I'm piggybacking this gentlemans post I'll bring my point to a close. I HIGHLY ENCOURAGE YOU YOUR WIFE & ESP. CHILD if you have one of age 8-10 is a good age for kids growing up in the country .to visit international hunter education association website, and find a course near you, all you need 2 afternoons (usually Friday &Saturday or sat./sun. And a fee of around $50 per adult depending on where you live, ) I guarantee the knowledge you will gain on various guns/ammo/uses ect. Will certainly help In deciding the right gun for you, and the price of mind you will have knowing that your wife & or child, can use that weapon properly and effectively should a threat pose outside of your presence. Will far surpass the little amount of money and time you spent.

for me i have a 30/30 a 308, 12 and 410 guage shot gun two 20 guage shotguns..several 22 in both rifle and pistol and my old trusty carring arm a 9mm which is also my home/property protection...i think i have it covered

The best gun to shot depends on what or who you are shooting. Hunting four-legged deer in SW Kansas, a .243 is a great calibur to reach out in a hurry and drop a trophy buck.
