It's just really asinine to want to rely on the sound of a shell being racked to "intimidate" someone who just broke into your house.
If you are going to confront an intruder you better have already racked the load. By the time he hears it should be too late.

look at it like this.
if they hear the 'rack' and keep coming.. then you KNOW they intend to do youharm, as they are continuing, knowing you are armed...
that sends a message as to their intentions.

breaking into a house that may not be occupied is different than breaking into one you KNOW is occupied.
when you KNOW someone is there, you should be pretty sure of a confrontation.
If no one is there, it's a smash and grab.

WTH does that have to do with how quick your going to get shot because you waste time racking a round after confronting the thug?

Four in the tube... Blank, Rubber Buckshot, Birdshot, Slug..
Pick up the 12ga, and rack the blank in. maybe 10 seconds.
Granted, if you are surprised by an intruder in the middle of the night you might not have 10 seconds..
