it kicks enough that I'm afraid to put a scope on it for fear of coreing a hole into my skull.. i just use the 100-200-300 flip up leaf sights.. besides.. with .416rigby.. all you have to do is just hit them somewhere.. :)

the cavitation path can easilly remove limbs on large+ animals, or hollow out large and vaporize anything medium plus and down... :)

My thoughts on stopping power on the .338. I just expended enough rounds (6) to put it in the bullseye at 100 yards and no more.

Deer are thin skinned anyway. A shoulder shot is a stopper no matter what. Probably any hit will be a stopper one way or another. You can only legally load 3 here.

Every column in the Hornady Reloading book is checked 'dangerous game' for the .338 I suspect bear is fair game too.

I'd be concerned with any scope with limited eye relief, you'd wind up looking like the Little Rascal's dog.... Not to mention scope life, why I mounted a Leupold. I'd like a Schmit and Bender but I don't have the wallet.....

I'd like to try the .500 Nitro Express sometime.....

Since you mention .338...

Good to have a friend to cover your back!!!

Big Bear shot Saddle Hills Alberta, Canada, Sept. 20, 2010

These two gents were calling elk in the Saddle Hills south of Woking , Alberta when this big guy slipped in on the caller. The Shooter spotted the bear about 8 yards from the caller and dropped him with 5 shots out of his 338 Win Mag.. Farmers in the area knew about the bear but weren't able to track after it had killed 3 horses, 5 cows, 13 sheep and a pen full of chickens on several different homesteads in the area. Fish and wildlife had bear traps set up in the area but noticed on surveillance video that whenever he would enter a trap, his hump would hit the top of the culvert trap slowing him enough that the trap door would wack him on the head before he was all the way in the rear. Check out the scar tissue on his face?. Bear weighed in just under 1300 pounds and would have stood 11 セ feet tall on its hind legs?.

That would make a nice bear rug for the great room......:)

Me thinks the kinetic energy in a .338 Lapua round is greater than a Win Mag.

Either way, I don't want to be 'close up and personal' with any bear at anytime.

We have bear on our property, a few and they are very anti-social and that's good with me.

Years ago, I had a chance encounter with a bear in Pennsylvania. Once was more than enough....

Magna-Port.....

And, different loads... I found I liked loading with 2400 powder, but it had a snappier kick that H110 or 296...

Magna-Ported, with H110 was nice... :D And the price to port was really not bad.

I didn't go the Magna-Port route as I shoot a loot of lead and was told that lead and Magna-Port didn't mix, but I may need to think about it again as I really need to start doing more shooting. I now have to shoot from a seated position as I have to use crutches. I may get a portable shooting bench.

I have used all those powders and finally settled on 2400 for jacketed bullets and Unique for lead. I like those powders as they have broad application. I use to use Bullseye in .38, but haven't in quite a while. I have tried about all of the pistol powders, but don't do much experimenting anymore.

I had one for some time till UPS lost it in shipment...

Me and a buddy used to shoot the steel targets at 100M at a local range. Not competition, just for fun. Shot off hand though, un-supported. I was hitting pigs 8 of 8 shots, same for turkeys. Chickens were more challenging, usually 6 of 8.

Was fun, as folks could shoot lower power rifle, 30-30 ect, at them. Guys would be missing with a rifle from a bench; we were standing right next to them, hitting the steel target with a 6" barrel pistol...

Still kick myself; paid a bill with the insurance instead of replacing it...

Liked 240gr JHP over a load of H110...

44mag with a 240gr jhp or sp is a surprising accurate round... A buddy had a S&W 629 with the 8" barrel; shot that at the steel targets too.

I never did get very good with mine and my son hasn't either. I was fairly good with the Black Hawk, 629 Classic and a Red Hawk; don't know why I couldn't get good with the Desert Eagle.

Yep.. A good shoulder shot with any of those huge wildcat cartridges may very well likely blow the shoulder out or drop the led off if under the joint,.. definately seperate the joint and cause about a 6" void or concussive trauma path around the hit area. should deffinately at least knock the animal down / off ballance.

I watched a video of some guys on a safarie hunt and a cape buffalo charged, at 100 yards one guy popped it with a .416rigby and it tumbled and slid about 15' and died. Was not a head or upper neck shot.. was some sort of chest shot. was quite impressive.

but yeah.. big animals.. take big guns. last show I was at i saw at least 3 boxes of 338L almost never find any 416r got a guy telling me he will bring me some some day.. but he never does.. :(
