Seems like you'd want to find an implement that would tear up the dirt in a random manner, (as opposed to a chisel plow). One that doesn't make subsurface grooves. Maybe you'll have to build it.

I can envision a very heavy (weighted) unit that rolls on the ground, forcing spikes into the dirt in a random pattern. You may have to do it after a rain when the dirt is a little softer.

Land scape rakes seem like they would just scratch the surface, not actually dig in and churn up the top 1-2-3" inches.

Landscape Rakes are normally used on an angle, with the trailing side about 1" higher than the leading side. Dirt is picked up by the leading side and distributed across the face of the Landscape Rake. So, as you are grading torn up ground, you get an even finish with high spots redistributed across face of the rake, filling low areas. This is the essence of grading.

If you want to "churn" or till the track a Disc Harrow is designed for that purpose. However, your 2-WD, 20-hp tractor is marginal for pulling a Disc Harrow. You MAY be able to pull a 44" or 48" angle-iron frame Disc Harrow with your 2-WD tractor but the Disc Harrow will not do any useful field/garden work for you, it will only be useful for churning the track.

You should have expressed your desire to penetrate 3" in your opening post. Responses would have been more focused.

You made an advantageous buy on your Mitsubishi tractor. Congratulations.

All posts considered and cost factor applied, I would try a Chain Harrow first. You have enough power/traction to pull a 60" Landscape Rake.

Hey, thanks.
It seemed like a good deal to me, $2600 for a three cylinder machine that weighs 2000+ pounds. CAT1 and rear PTO. 60" belly mower. 880 hours on it.
Could spend $2000 for a gas Kohler engine lawn mower. So, yea, it is a cool little machine.

I'm not actually looking to consistently churn and pulverize 3" deep. Just "prep the track". As we ride we create ruts. From time to time it is good to refresh the track a bit. Knock down the hi spots, loosen up the packed tire paths, distrupt the weeds that grow a bit.

That I-beam looking soil pulverizer seems like it would work well for my needs.
The roller with spikes in it would loosen up the dirt a bit. The scarfing teeth would certainly tear it up and loosen it up and pop some rocks out. It would do a very general job of moving the high spots to low. That would be fine.

No want or need to groom it dead flat and smooth. Just distrupt the "main line" of the track 3-4-5 times a year so we could start with a fresh track.

Almost like I could fassion something up myself somehow. We did make the original drag ourselves. Was for pulling behind ATV. No I modified it for 3PH use with a tower and tie bar mount so can pick it up. That was the problem with it on ATV, no way to pick it up. Like to disengage is over the wooden bridges and jumps as not to tear them up. It is good to leave the faces of jumps hard pack.

I'll post a pic of what we made (me and the 13 year old). Nothing fancy or nice, but something to do in the garage.
Problem with it is it is like 36" long and four rows of teeth and it doesn't like to turn as all the teeth are digging in sideways.

But these soil pulverizers are one row of teeth and I imagine turn better. Even the larger ones that are two rows of teeth, they are only 10-12" apart.
Have to find a nice I-beam and see what I can fab up.

Thanks all for the help here.
Coo

AS you can see: The "teeth" are lengths of angle iron 6-8" long. You can imagine it doesn't want to turn.

I get free steel from work. The kid got a flux core welder for his birthday. We like messing around in the garage. Might have to try Version #2

Consider modifying your current design into a Landplane / Grading Scraper.

Are you talking about a landscape rake like this?

CountyLine Landscape Rake, 6 ft. W - For Life Out Here

If so, I'm not understanding "trailing side 1" higher than leading side", as the rake has only one plane of contact.

My landscape rake will fairly vigorously dig down into soft to medium soil. In sandy or loamy soil it will remove rocks, roots etc. It does a reasonably good job of leveling, though not as good as a box scraper . . . but then the box scraper is not so good with rocks.

After seeing your homemade drag, I would remove the angle iron "teeth" and get some 1/2" or larger rebar and cut it into 5"-6" lengths and weld it onto the cross members of the existing drag so that the rebar teeth would extend about 3" below the the drag.

Similar to this: 4ft harrow / arena drag. Heck, you could even add the rake on the back like this one has if you want a smoother surface.
