check6, you never said which model Echo you have, but if it's a smaller model and you want to upgrade to a mid-size pro Stihl, I'd suggest the MS-261 with 18" bar. It has a magnesium case and weighs 11.5 lbs. It is 50cc, but will easily out cut the larger (and heavier) 55cc Farm Boss and use less fuel to boot (all due to improved technology/capability).

An equivalent pro Husky saw would be the 346XP. It's a very good saw. And the comparable Echo would be the CS-500P. The MS-261, 346XP, and 500P are some of the best saws from each company.

You're likely to get recommendations for the Stihl MS-250 and MS-290 (Farm Boss), but you're better off putting your money into a higher end Stihl. The 250/290 are plastic saws running old technology and weigh more than they need to. They are Stihl's best sellers, but that's mainly due to price point.

I wouldn't worry about the Stihl flippy caps. They have worked out the kinks at this point, and the caps are pretty easy to use. I would suggest you pay attention to the little black notch though, which shows you where to insert the cap before tightening back down. People run into issues with the flippy cap when the notch gets out of phase with the hole and rotates the inner sealing toggle. Fixing that is a simple matter of rotating the toggle 180 degrees to "reset" the cap, but it really trips up a lot of people.

Now, the fact that I need to explain that is a reason to think the flippy caps are a dumb idea. I mean, it's a cap, and it should be working for us, not the other way around. Personally, I never had issues with a regular screw cap, and would prefer them if given the choice.

It is a MS 400 good point about ECCO being easy to start

I'm sure this has been discussed many times but let's do it again.

I'm looking for a new chain saw. I currently have the Stihl trimmer on a pole that is great and I use ot have the Stihl 16" bar chain saw that needed replacement. My local dealer recommended the EHCO 16 in bar. I have used it for about a year but I'm not happy with it. Today it threw a chain twice and the chain was (not any more) new and properly adjusted. So what is everybody using. I have bought my wife two rather expensive Husqvarna sewing machines and I told the dealer she should at least throw in a chain saw for me, didn't happen. I am leaning towaeds either a Husqvarna or Stihl Comments/ recommendations

I would chose a stihl over a husqvarna any day. We have 2 stihl saws that BOTH run and 1 husqvarna that doesn't run and never has run good. Just my 2 cents worth.

Philip.

3 words. Stihl Pro Series

Awesome saws, great dealer support, and have great resale.

I would avoid the cheaper homeowner line.

Also finding a good used Stihl is another good option.

If you want a fierce saw that still relatively lightweight... check out the MS361!

Have a Stihl MS362 with 20 and 25 inch bars. The flippy caps have never seemed to be a problem to me. With the 20" bar and 33RSC chain this saw is absolutely amazing in the its ability to cut through logs with bar completely buried.Almost to the point of being scary at the cutting speed this saw has.

Is it possible to throw away the "Toolless" fuel and oil caps and replace them w/ old style units?

I have a Husky with 32 inch bar, Husky with 18 inch bar, and 2 Macs with 16 inch bars. I have compared my menagerie to the saws of friends when we were out in the woods working them. I do not recommend Poulon or Craftsman. They are not as good as either Stihl or Husqvarna.

Stihl and Husqvarna are good choices. My macs are good saws but I don't know about new ones (still makin' 'em?) Macs are about 10 and 15 years old respectively.

I recommend using Stabil in your fuel all the time or draining the tank and running the engine till it dies of fuel starvation with choke on at the end of a session. You never know how long it will sit before you pick it up again and decomposed fuel is a real clear and present danger to your chainsaw use pleasure.

I have a Stihl 260 and an old Husky 66 that's about 20 years old. I like both saws. I bought the 260 about a year ago because I wanted a lighter saw and my buddy that sells saws sells Stihl. I am not crazy about the new caps but have made my piece with them. I would not hesitate to buy a Husky or Stihl pro grade saw.

I would highly suggest Poland or Husquarna. They are tough, more durable and reliable.

These needs to be deleted it is JUNK:thumbdown: I use a Echo CS-370 for allround use and make sure to run it dry

I vote for Stihl.

Well, I'm new to this forum but isn't this mostly a personal preference decision? Feelings about Stihl vs Husky are strong in these parts (logging country -- Pac NW). I have a Husky 350 w/ 20" bar (3.2 HP/52 cc, I think) and it's been great. The new equivalent version is the 450. We have 320 acres of timberland and I'm always using it for something. After 4 years, it still starts on the 1st or 2nd pull. It's been bounced out of the tractor FEL and the case cracked. I'd buy the Husky again just because of the fuel and oil filler caps, like others have said. I have a Stihl brushwhacker and I hate that fuel cap.

Before I bought I checked with my arborist friend... he said Husky and Stihl are tossup. Having said that, the big box store versions are less good.
I had the Husky 350 for years and used the **** out of it. Last year I was cutting a big downed oak and it heated up to the point where some plastic got sucked into the carb and ruined the thing. Good news is that my Husky dealer went to bat for me and I got the newer version 450 for free even though I purchased the original at Lowes. Actually I liked the design of the 350 better, but begger/choosers ya know?

Our Stihl 041 farm boss saw has been run over by a tractor. We used it today, still runs great. It is a older saw we purchased new in the late 80s. We never have done anything to it except sharpen the chain, replace the bar a few times and I believe we changed the spark plug one time a few years ago.:D Like most of the people here I would go with a stihl.
