I need to change the engine oil in my 790. I see the recommendations in the manual, with 5w-30 covering the biggest temp range, however I cannot find that weight anywhere.
I mostly use the tractor to plow snow so cold starts matter more--we sometimes have periods of -10F, but it does get over 85 degrees here too and I'd like the protection there if I need it.

Can I use 0w-40?

Thanks,

Carl

That's odd because 5w30 is fairly common here in southern PA. I try to stick with what is recommended in the manual. Could you order online? Pepboys, advanced auto, true value, Walmart even?

Well I was looking for the Torq-Gard brand. I should have mentioned that. If I can just use a high-quality other brand, then I guess I'm good!

Thanks

Yes, you can use 0W-40. The 0 number just indicates how well oil will flow in colder temperatures.

I buy Castrol 5w30 for VW TDIs at the local VW dealership.

Have looked online for M1 0w30 ESP (exhaust system protection, for diesel DPFs) and occasionally find it for about the same price. Next oil change to the 2025R I'll look ahead of time online for it. Would be even better. Have the Castrol in the Isuzu diesel generator driver as well.

Oh, didn't realize you were looking for a specific brand... Ha.

5w-30 is typically an S rated oil not suitable for diesels. 10w-30 would be a good conventional or synthetic blend viscosity. 5w-40 if you prefer full syn.

Not any more, many brands carry 5W-30 C rated (Compression ignition) for diesel engines. Amsoil has 3 different ones alone.

Whatever. Go to an average auto parts store, Sams Club, Costco or Walmart and see how many C rated 5w-30 oils you find. The OP isn't seeing it either.

Yep the average auto parts store might not carry a C rated 5w30. So shop at an above average store like an on-line store maybe? AMSOIL DHD 5w30 is available and currently they have a promotion with FREE shipping. A top notch oil delivered right to your doorstep....Dutchy

It's out there, maybe not in all regions, so online may be the best option.

Same question, different day:
What is the ONE grease I can use for all of my greasing needs.
What is the ONE OIL that will work.
Answer:
Your equipment was designed by precision engineering.
The lubricants were a part of that.
If you care about maintaining your equipment for many decades of operation you will follow the MFG recommendations.
There is NOBODY here that can give you better advice than them.

Here's a source for M1 0w30 ESP: Exxon Mobil 1 ESP X1 W-3 | SCL Only about $32 for 6 qts.

Carl,
Tractor Supply regularly carries Rotella T6 which I have had, like many others, very good experience with.
Maybe not 5W-30, or 0W-40; most diesel oils are 15/40 with 5W/40 as an option for colder climates.

I don't think you could go wrong with this oil

Been running 5W-40 Shell T6 in my L39 TLB Kubota with just under 2,500 hours. After 164 hours I got around to changing the oil finally. I went with 5 Qt Jug of 0W-40 Shell T6 & 3 quarts 5W-40 Shell T6. All is good, especially for the winter.
Motor will probably outlast me.
I expect my now sold old B7200 of then 32 years motor with 3,000 hours could run for another 30 years. 50 hour oil changes are a waste of time.

Torq-Gurd is John Deere's house brand of oil. It should be available at any JD dealer or online.

NAPA & O'Reillys - each have half a dozen brands with 5W-30 oil.

Everyone has their OWN idea about what oil and weight is best, and to be honest, ALL of them will work just fine, IF you keep it changed like you are suppose to.

This is what I put in my loader tractor yesterday,

It's the first time I've ever used that brand, and the first time I've ever put synthetic oil in that tractor.
