Come on guys - there can be a quality difference. He said he has had good luck with that brand. The multi-speed is something i had not considered. I suspect that is something I should consider.

Check out Howard Rotovators if you have a need for multi-speed tillers.

It looks like it has only 4 tines per rotor......6 would be better, but love the fact she weighs over 1/2 a ton!
ALL CCM tillers have 6 tines per flange. The SR series uses a larger tine than the MR series. This is because the SR series is usually used with large HP tractors. The SR series tills deeper into the soil and need the larger heavier tines.
When you compare tillers you need the consider:
  1. Weight of the tiller with similar equipment (Kuhn includes 100-150 Lbs for optional wheel kit)
  2. HP range the tiller is designed to be used
  3. Scroll diameter
  4. Gear drive or chain drive
No question Kuhn is a premium manufacturer. If you want to compare like tillers the EL92 is close to the SR series in the CCM tillers. The EL62 is similar to the MR series tillers. While the lesser Kuhn models are quality tillers they are designed for lower HP tractors and a lighter duty use.

The original poster specified 'heavy duty' tiller. I simply relayed my experience with trying to go cheap in an application that required heavy duty. I'm sorry that I offended someone who clearly believes in using the wrong tool for the job, but facts are facts, and that seems completely lost on FWJ. I'm not sure what part about a brand of tiller, other than his obvious favorite, weighing considerably more, using far stronger gear boxes and being made stronger eludes his ability to comprehend. Only a complete slobbering fool would look at a light weight homeowner targeted implement sitting next to the same implement built for heavy duty commercial use and proclaim that one isn't any better than the other and it just costs more.

The original poster didn't say that they wanted a decent tiller for a home food plot that would see occasional use. They specified 'heavy duty' in their description of what they wanted. I only offered a suggestion along with commenting that the CCM sure looks well built and I'm attacked by someone. I don't get it. I could post clear and concise observations based on the sarcastic response, but I'll refrain from the obvious. ;)

Interesting discussion, perspectives, and choices. Can someone elightening me on the pros and cons of:(1) chain vs gear drive, (2) skids vs wheel, and (3) forward vs reverse action? Thank you.

Most of you premium manufacturers use gear drives in their upper scale units. The chain and chain adjuster are the 2 most replaced parts on a tiller other than tines and skids. If you get rid of the chain you get rid of 2 problems. Gear drive tillers usually are more efficient in power transfer and are designed to carry more load than chain drive units.

The Kioti tillers are made by Sicma. Sicma is a premium tiller manufacturer. Your tiller is a Sicma CS series & is designed to be used on 30-50 HP tractors. It is also available in a gear drive transmission. Your DK40 is on the low end of the PTO HP needed so your tiller is well matched with your tractor. Take the same tiller and put it on a 60 PTO HP tractor and that tractor has a greater potential of breaking the tiller. The next thing out of novice's mouth is you have to set the clutch properly. A clutch is there only to stop catastrophic damage to the both the tiller and the tractor. If you go from full 540 RPM's to decelerating in milliseconds something has to absorb all that inertia. Likely something will break and you want the cheap wear parts to break like a tine or a tine bolt.

When you step up in HP range in SICMA like to the ST or SP series they are only offered gear driven, no chain drives there. You get back to the previously mentioned example of the differesnce between a 1/2 ton truck and a 1 ton truck.

My old red Yanmar chain drive tiller has beed very faithful and sturdy. A little oil leak on the chain case but that's all after 20 years. And remember, I do my gravel driveway in the middle of Summer when the 21AA, mud and clay are as hard as concrete. I only go down an inch or 2, and run at a crawl speed in reverse, but its never complained. I did till a 10 acre field once with it. Took all weekend...
