As JB4310 says

I am not competent to go into the discussion of an Ar, vs, M, vs, so and so and so, even though I have probably used more then most here.

.

Ah.. so plain military pattern weapons are now 'black' weapons. That reminds me of the media calling every gun they can find an 'assault' weapon... 'Black' sounds ominous.. maybee even negative... Can't wait till the media catches on to that one.. Just another way to demonize guns I figure...

We need to be carefull how we stereotype our tools.. lest they be cast into a bad light unintentionally.

For most home defense a rifle is silly and a shotgun is perfect.

depends, I think a more realistic direction of this conversion is focused toward the 4 legged kind that can threaten not only my family but also my livestock which is basically saying my family.

You wont get with in shotgun range of a coyote period. (well while its alive)

My choice would be a 12gauge pump with riot barrel and full magazine, 00 shot. With that, a .45acp variant.

One thing I see missing from this thread though, is training. A number of folks here have military backgrounds, and have some training.

However, if you want the ability to protect yourself in the worst conditions, you need to train for that. I know a local trainer, who offers defensive pistol and shotgun classes. He also had after dark training available. How to deal with muzzle flash, choose and use a tacticle flashlight.

I have shot targets in low light conditions. Also lit off a 44mag out in the desert in the dark. It had a Magnaported barrel; wow, talk about muzzle flash! But, non of that was akin to in the dark, close confined quarters, high stress.

Choosing the weapon is one thing, being proficient with it is another.

Training is a good point. I see a few carry permit holder here as well as military people.. between the military and safety courses both defense and hunting, that's better than nothing. next will be proficiency with the weapon.. .. and that comes with range time.. learning to load, unload, cock, de-cock and clear jambs by feel.. do it fast and safely know the firearm like the back of your hand and know how to operate it's controlls... IE.. muscle memory..

A high powered rifle projectile would pass through an intruder (hopefull an intruder and not a fireman or paramedic called to the wrong address or a loved one sneaking in trying not to wake you etc) through the neighbours house and kill the engine block in his Hummer parked out back . Ive got a strong feeling now that some people would welcome an intrusion just to get their guns off :(.

I understand exactly why you say that and I only hope that some of the guys are just "talking big", if you know what I mean. I intend no offense by that, but I'd hope everyone here would never want to have to fire a weapon at another person. Fortunately many here have spoken in that spirit as well as mentioning the clear safety concern of using a high powered rifle for home defense and making sure you are absolutely certain (read, can clearly see) what the threat is. I, for one, can say that I have had some training (by no means do I claim to be a Navy SEAL or Army Ranger etc.), have the appropriate permits but honestly hope the day never comes when I have to point a loaded firearm at another human. I think several others here really would be of the same mindset. I hope so anyway.

Yep, the guys on the skids of the Black Choppers carry Black Guns.........

The guys in the Black Choppers Carry Little Black Guns

The folks I tend to run around with, tend not to "demonize" guns too much, they tend to respect and use them a bit more then most.

If a coyote gets into your home, no weapon will help.

Bigger & heavier I can deal with

Problem is, my wife can't. The gun does her no good if she doesn't know how to both operate and shoot it.

They can park in your garage or barn. I don't usually park in my garage, especially in nicer weather. And, if the find a garage with enough mess so they know you won't use it, but little enough that they can clear a spot, this is the best of all. The spot clearing is fast, because they don't care about neatness, and they know you won't look there before coming in. They want their car out of sight so they won't be spotted by neighbors.

First off, no way in heck could they clear a space out in the garage:D Since I've lived at our "new" house (last 5 years) I've never parked in the garage.

Each house and terrain is different. Having a long, private drive way from the road does have it's advantages.

Just rmember this. When you go and investigate a noise, and you're leaving a secure area (hopefully where you have your loved ones secured at as well), you now run the possibility of putting the "bad guys" between you and your loved ones.

Fact is, unlike the T.V shows, when people go clearing a house, you NEVER seperate from your team.

The liberal media, reading this public access website.. that's what concerns me.. that's where innocous terms come from.. starts with a whisper.. then it's a news story / expose'.. then it's a gun ban..
