One again I need to come to the experts. This weekend while hauling sawdust for my garden, I decided I needed a rear blade. I'm looking for the heaviest most durable blade I can find. I need it for weight, and I also plan to use it. I checked into Bush Hog, Woods, Land Pride, and others. I'm a bit confused by the classes, and grades. I own a NH TC21d, and want the tilting , and turning style. My wife has been kind enough to surpise me today with this being my Birthday Present. So I'm looking for the best that my TC21D will handle. Thanks Again for answering all my other questions. Kent

I've see a lot of used back blades that are bent. Seems the cheapest are lightweight units that won't take really heavy use. I have seen a few models that have several vertical ribs on the back that have obviously been used from the worn paint but they weren't all twisted.

Figure out how much weight your tractor will handle. Look for reinforcing that enables the blade to do what you want and not bend. I've got a Bushhog that I bought specifically for heavy use. It will tilt, swivel 360 degrees and can be offset. It's heavy enough that it won't give up before the tractor will. Woods also makes a good unit.

I wouldn't look at the bottom of the line blades. Look at the next level up and don't buy it without checking the blade reinforcing. You'll end up with something that will do what you want and won't look like a something out of a Dali painting when you hit a rock or root that stays put.

Go to landpride.com, rear blades. They have the blades listed by horse power catagories. I have an RB2584 7 footer, it is a really nice blade and works very well. The other brands also have good blades (Bush Hog, Woods and ect.) but stay away from the economy blades at the farm stores. Those will bend up real easy.

Thanks for the replies. I'm grateful. I had an idea which companies to look at. I was a bit confused by the Ratings, and such. I want to get the heaviest blade that I can for my TC21d. Thanks again.

Steelfan,

I am looking at blades, too. I found a Pioneer (at a JD dealer) that looked really well built, and it had tilt as well (can't remember if it offsets). The other one I've found is a Bush Hog 35-05. Same features, about the same price, right around $400. Weight on both blades was in the 250-280 lb range and were 5 foot models. I'm not sure how big a TC21D is, but I'm looking for a BX2200, if that helps sizing comparisons.

Kevin ,Thanks for the info. The TC21D is a bit bigger frame then the BX2200. I looked hard at the BX2200 before I bought the TC21D. Nice Tractor. I need weight for the back of my Tractor, and I decided to buy a blade instead of added weight (Suitcase or Wheel). With the blade when I'm mowing I can take everything off the tractor to save my yard. Also I can use the blade for its uses. Just didn't make sense to spend money on Weights. The range you are talking about is about right. New Holland says 7-50lbs suitcase weights for the 3PH. If I can get about 270 to 280, I think I'll be fine. I'll check out the Pioneer brand. Thanks Kent

Kent,

I don't have much to add to this that will help you, but I will make one recommendation. I bought a 5' Farm King for my B2410. It is a great size for the tractor, but it only angles---no tilt or offset. I didn't see "Offset" on your wish list, but I highly recommend it!! If, for example, you are plowing snow/gravel/dirt etc and have the blade at the max angle, my blade barely covers the tire (if at all). I would love it if my blade would offset to allow the blade to extend out 8 - 12" past the current spot.

Go heavy, with tilt, angle, and offset!!!

Just my $0.02.

A lot of blades in the 300 lb category require tools to offset. It is not as easy an operation as changing the angle. I would offset my 6' blade a lot more often if I didn't need to get out the wrenches and shift the moldboard to do it. More of the blades in the 500 lb category can offset easily without tools. Think about what features you will use a lot, and what you are willing to pay for them.

One issue about using the rear blade for ballast is that it sticks out much further than, say, a box blade.

I'm getting some great advice here. I do need a rear blade for snow removal, and ground leveling. That's why I decided to go that direction. I'd like to go for a blade in the 250 to 300 lb range. Also wanted tilt, and turn. Thanks for the great replies. Kent

Steelfan,
I have a Woods RB 60.
Weight 235 lbs.
Has tilt and offset, and angle
1/2 x 6" Medium carbon steel.
I have not had to use mine very often only some light grading, it did however have the amazing power to scare away the snow/w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif I bought it primarily for snow removal and as you guessed as soon as it was delivered mid January it did not snow a single flake.
