Best Tire for Boggy Ground

Following on from Gordon, I think the best choice is a tire designed for floatation and traction. The best one I've seen is the Michelin "MegaXbib". Here's a link.

Limited size availability though. /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif

Maybe we could dream....

So here is an idea for the "ultimate flotation tire":

And what size implements would be required to cover those tracks/w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif

Jeez - before you adapt your tractor for that stretch monster you should consider just adding caterpillar tracks to it. Now that's flotation ...

He didn't mention anything about covering tracks. He asked for floatation. /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

You go changing the specs on me, and it's going to cost extra. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

Well, I was getting fond of the turfs with chains idea until I heard that they fill up too. My dealer said the same thing. In fact, he said that R4's, as bad as they might be in mud (and they are bad), are better than turfs with chains in mud. Claims he speaks from experience.

The Michelin XM27's look good. Those are Chalkley's tires and someone else here has them, too. I dont know how to figure out whether they are available to fit a 2910. Dealer had no clue; told me to talk to Michelin. I know that the rolling circumference ratio has too be maintained for the 4wd. Sounds like its hard to figure out and expensive.

And, Bird, no, I have never been to a mud bog pulling contest. In Connecticut, we of course go to the opera every night, except when we're watching lightning bugs.

I make my living as a computer system consultant. Customers that change specs on the fly are what paid for my tractor/w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif This tractor stuff is easy compare to what I do for a living. I've been working in specification free environments for over 20 years/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Hey, it keeps bread on the table and diesel in the tractor.

Well, the consensus seems to be ags of the generally available choices. Others hypothesize that the Michelin XM27's would be the best because they seem to combine an ag-like tread on a wide floatation tire.

Take a look at the new M9000 "Mudder" tractor on the Kubota site. (I dont know how to import pictures.) It has four extremely narrow ag tires all of the same size.

You mean this one?

Now here's a thought - you would have to be SO unlucky to end up needing the ROPS on that thing.

Glenmac,

As far as I'm concerned, the only tractors that wouldn't benefit from the design characteristics of the XM27's are: 1) Situations that call for a turf tire (like, um, for example, cutting grass...) and 2) Situations that require a narrow tire (like, um, between crop rows). There's probably something I left out in my broad, generalized, sweeping statement, but you're used to that, right? /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif But, in general, excluding those situations, I think the XM27's are hands down better than anything else, period. Ya got yer radial advantages. Ya got yer floatation. Ya got yer aggressive tread. Ya got plenty of cross-section for ballasting, if ya need it. Ya got yer durability and puncture resistance. Ya got yer high load rating. Ya got the ability to air them suckers down to 9 psi if ya really need stump-pullin' traction. What more do you want? (I know, I know: to spend about half the money. Alas. But, in this case, ya at least gets what ya pays fer. And how often do you get to make that brag?)

If you really want to evaluate using XM27's on your 2910, find out what the mechanical ratio between the front and rear wheels is. You may have to call Kubota factory service to get that. It's not in the shop manuals or anything else you or your dealer are likely to have. Let me know that number, as well as what tires came on your beast, and I can help you with the rest.
