I think a lot of us have engaged a brush hog at high RPM and scared the bajeebers out of ourselves....

Common... admit it folks... you know you did it... :confused3:

Nope. That's hard to do on an older machine like mine with a live PTO- But I will admit to killing a rabbit and 2 kittens by not following the advice I offered in post #9. Also, I had to lift my Hico into a pickup (with help from the young bride) 32 years ago before I could get it home and use it, so we got the clanking noise introduced to us prior to use.

Actually the secret is to let out the clutch nice and easy. It never fails. I'm still waiting for the bajeebers to leave.;)

Thank you all...all good stuff. My independent pto has an on/off and a link selection which automatically disengages the pto when I raise the 3pt. I scared the crap out of myself the 1st time I engaged it even below 540...I wasn't expecting the shake, rattle and roll. Engaging at idle and ramping it up to 540 obviously works the best, I just wanted to make sure I was doing anything wrong.

I just got a new rotary/brush cutter with a slip clutch. I adjusted the slip clutch and just want to know the best way to start these up. I'm running a branson 3120 with pto switch. I know to run it 540 rpms but it seems to jump and bang around when I 1st engage it.

Should I keep the rpms down to engage it with the switch, then ramp it up to 540? Or are they ok to just start at 540?

I start my rotary cutter with the tractor at idle and spin the throttle up once the PTO is engaged. I inadvertently videoed the inside of the cab starting and running my rotary cutter.
