Metal or plastic? OP really doesn't say.

I'd try ammonia. Ship back with some ammonia and wish you were a mouse on wall of seller when he smells them.

If you put enough ammonia in, if he gets a good enough whiff, good chance he'll keel over in a faint. I've seen it happen. :D

I would use dish soap and hot water to start with, then perhaps follow up with a steam pressure washer inside (most tractor dealers should have one).
Ammonia should me a good finisher to mask any remaining smells :D

Here's another thought. Go to your local fish store and buy activated charcoal. I've had good luck getting a lot of other nasty smells out of containers and even a frig with it. It isn't fast however. The frig took months however it was still being used at the time.

You could always fill it with eggs and let it sit in the sun for a week but then you'd be asking another question.

His rants on hunting and polyester? Can't help him?

Don't know how it is with gas smell but ammonia sure helps keep the bears out of the garbage although I think Pine Sol works a bit better. I use both just to be safe.

That's a good very good idea, charcoal absorbs a lot. However, the problem is the plastic absorbing the gas, not the gas just floating around on its own. So it might not be as effective. Worth a try though.

My mom smelled up my grandmothers old frig (which was at this time in her basement) by leaving old paint brushes in it and forgetting about them. She called me and I recommended charcoal. It did work but it took time.

I just got a 15 gal spot sprayer and based on my research ammonia is the best thing to clean them between spraying different chemicals - rinse several times to get all liquids out. put in ammonia in 1/2 cup per 2.5 gal or so - let shake to get it on all the surface and let set overnight
