Interesting, most of the local riders in my area have a chase vehicle as well, that chase vehicle being me.

Just a thought about riders in "packs". At least when they're in packs, you can pass bunches at a time. I'd rather have to pull all the way over to the other lane and pass a bunch, then have it clear, like when passing a car, than to have them strung out for a mile where you're placed in a position of "lane sharing".

From my own experience as a "runner" I go to great effort to stay away from cars on the road. I run against traffic, so I can see cars coming, and, when I do, I head for the shoulder whenever possible. I never like to be in a position where the cars are approaching me from behind because I never know if the driver is paying attention. Also, it's very hard to hear them coming, especially when it's windy.

From my experience, I've also been in a position (common also to cyclists) where there just isn't a shoulder for a portion of the route I'm on. In that case, trying to get too close to what there is of a shoulder is dangerous. This is where cyclist and runners haven't much choice but to "take the lane" so keep from being squished into the guardrail or going off into a ditch.

I'm constantly aware that only a split second means the difference between life and death for me.

Also, based on my own road-sharing needs and experiences, I always allow as much space when overtaking pedestrians and bikers as possible. All I can think about is how bad I'd feel if I hit someone, maiming or killing them, regardless of who's "fault" it was.

In closing, my only plea to fellow motorists, tractor owners and pedestrians on the board is to please try to have some patience and mercy on those with whom you share the road.

Interesting that the article you pasted mentions "The mission of the WashCo BTC is to promote bicycle transportation, protect bicyclists rights"

Interesting that driving a car isn't a "right", but it is a "right" to ride a bike.

Wait a minute, heres a scary thought for the cycling community, perhaps riding a bike on a PUBLIC road isn't a right, but a PRIVILEGE.

From a legal perspective it's true, driving a car is a privilege, riding a bike is a right. Your driving privileges can be revoked administratively for all sorts of reasons. Your right to operate a bicycle can only be revoked by a court as the consequence of a criminal act.

And that holds true for public highways?

Why then on some highways is bicycle riding not allowed? Should it not then be your right to ride your bike wherever you want to? Or am I mistaken? Can you ride your bike on any highway you darn well please?

Some highways (Interstates Mostly) have restrictions banning bicycles, pedestrians, slow moving vehicles (Tractors), and motor-driven cycles (Mopeds). These are also the same roads that have the minimum speed limits that these vehicles could not reasonably maintain.

I don't think that anyone is arguing that cyclists should be allowed on these types of highways. I also suspect that these cyclists that ruin your day are not biking on controlled access highways either...

In the end, I have one question.

Are the cyclists hurting you in any way or impeding your rights to life, liberty, or the pursuit of happiness?

If not, then I don't see the big deal.

And those people who claim that the cyclists "Threaten the lives of themselves and their families"... Give me a break. If a 180lb man on a 20lb bike is threatening you in a 3000lb automobile you have a serious problem. That's like carrying a .45 and being threatened by a 3 year old with a spork.

Suprised to find this thread on here...

When I ride I hate cars...when I drive I hate cyclist...so I see both sides. I almost never ride in packs anymore, I just got sick of the one butthead that needs to ride out by the yellow line. I ride alone but still take crap from cars because they already passed the buthead yesterday and they take it out on me.
10 years riding the roads in Connecticut, I don't think you can find less friendly people in the US...everyone's in a rush. It's easy to be a bully in a car or truck.

I AM suprise at some of the responses here but I guess I shouldn't be. A lot of stereo typing. I raced pro motocross for 13 years...went to a Taxidermy school, hunt, trap and fish. I have operated heavy equipment for 15+ years, drove dump truck and shoveled about a million yards of dirt. I am about as far from a "Yuppie" as you cab get.
I'll never win this fight and I'm not trying....your minds are made up but remember it's not all arrogant yuppies out there riding.

No kidding. One reason why I never consider myself stupid when I rode a bike, I was always very courteous, cautious and mindful of others when I rode.

For those who brought up the point about cyclists being killed by idiot drivers, here's a newsflash... idiot drivers have been killing innocent drivers of other vehicles as well. Nothing new. I'd be willing to bet that more innocent drivers have been killed by idiot car drivers than cyclists.

Well, if there is a law that can stop you from riding a bike on one road, I guess it's not too far fetched in thinking that more roads can be made "non-biking". Perhaps that's what they cycling community is afraid of.

Yeah, no big deal, I just hate dealing with rude people on the road on a regular basis, time after time.

I am sure you deal with more rude people in cars then on bikes.

I have no doubt that you're correct, however, I'm just lucky enough to get all the ignorant, inconsiderate cyclists all at one time, usually on the road to my house.

Likewise, not every cyclist I encounter is inconsiderate, but I have noticed that the majority of them (inconsiderate/ignorant) ride in groups:D

/ Bicycle question #158
Even in groups it only take 1 to make it look like the whole group is inconsiderate

Laughed my butt off today and thought of this thread.

On the way home, got behind two cyclists and stayed there for some time (they would make no attempt for me to pass them).

Well, wouldn't you know, a tractor pulls out in front of the two cyclists (on a rural road) in front of me and they couldn't pass!:D

Man, were they (cyclists) getting peeved because they were on a double yellow lane road and couldn't pass the tractor because they didn't know if any other cars where coming in the other direction (they were even waving their arms up in the air towards the driver of the tractor).

Gave me a BIG smile:D

Then it dawned on me. You have butthole car drivers, and you have butthole cyclists.

Quickdraw, I forgot to mention, you and I are a lot alike.

Now THAT, is funny.

Kind of like my lawncutting neighbor who flies under the radar cutting lawns on the side, no business licence, no taxes, private tags etc.

(wife has a commercial lawn care business)

Anyway, the neighbor was over singing the blues about all the guys out there on Craftsman mowers this year, how they were'nt "real" lawn care guys with commercial equipment.

Anyway, somehow that is true justice Sig, wonder if it dawned on them at all that you were behind them in the same position.
