Terry, let's see your organizational skills. How do you keep track of all your small tools?

With multiple chests are in play, about 10 years ago I started labeling my drawers with a labeler handed down from my mom. At the time I was feeling a little silly in doing it... but it has sure made me much more organized because I just couldn't throw a tool in a drawer not named for it!

Also very handy when I need to direct someone else to fetch a tool or when I am not home and the better half goes rummaging for something.

A Net

For those following this thread you have probably come to assume my shop time is all fun and games doing WHAT I want /WHEN I want.

While I must admit this may be the end game, once in a while a serious task overlooked for many years must be addressed.

Several birthdays ago my sister gave me this print she found as a humorous reminder of a past “nutcase” girlfriend.

While I found it amusing, I felt it lacked that “certain something”. Today I finally got around to adding a personal touch to it.

Material list:

Mesh packaging from art sponges my daughter had.
SS tig filler rod

IMG_6768.jpg

And a McDonalds toy I found in the kitchen junk drawer.

Done. Whew.....

I think I can finally make a contribution to the thread. Nothing you guys with clean shops where everything has a specified place will appreciate but slobs like me can make use of. Between farm equipment parts, woodworking material, woodworking tools, mechanic's tools,fishing/hunting gear, welding supplies, electrical supplies, plumbing supplies,lifting/pulling/towing tools and other lifetime collections,my stuff is stored in various sheds, portable buildings and primary workshop. Ever time I asked someone to fetch something or tell them where something is stored, confusion reigned, starting with which building right through which wall I was talking about. Some people's left is others right. North-South-East-West mingle's with first-second-third and other directions. After spending time telling them where to find it,they would often look on left wall of right hand building instead of right wall of left hand building. Once the are in right building remarks like "how in h*** am I supposed to find it amongst all this rubble" or "what a mess" often followed. After years of working with the color wheel,I memorized where primary & secoundary colors fall on the wheel starting at 12 o-clock for red as #1. I started by painting exterior header above doors of buildings different colors. Inside buildings,I painted top plate of walls. When entering a building with only one entrance,#1red is always on wall straight accross in front of you as you enter,#4yellow-orange 90* on the right wall,#7green above your head and#10 blue-violet on left wall. In larger space or to sort things more,#3 orange between #1&#4,#5 yellow between #4 & #7 and so on. To refine even farther, there's a total of 12 colors spanning 360* circle of wheel. Any single wall or any combonation of wall can be refined. Example, wall across from you as entering is all red, wall to your right #4yellow-orange plus #5yellow plus#6yellow-green,wall above your head all green, wall to left blue-vilot plus violet. Set red at 1 on your color wheel (or pull wheel up online) and this will make sense. It is not necessary for helper/borrowing neighbor to understand anything other than able to see colors. One that has never been to my place before is on equal ground as others. So here's the drill. Hey Joe,grab the 14"pipe wrench. It's in building with yellow above door outside and in tool bag below blue inside. It has helped immensely and work's equally well when telling someone where tools belong after job is complete. A simple easy to remember but helpful color scheme might be Red-white & Blue(flag) for three walls then yellow for the forth.

Small stuff close at hand, notice the rack is screwed to the top

Shadow cutouts make the missing items easy to spot

jax using colors and a color wheel paint scheme is ingenious. What a great idea to use for your situation!

ddbackhoe I like the bottom photo where the deep sockets are lying down and the matching sized regular depth sockets are upright. (And labelled. I don’t like to admit it but gone are the days where incremental changes of sizes in fasteners and tools were instantly recognizable).

Ah summer. Heaven is retiring from a lifetime of heat and long hours of eating dust on open station tractors to be able to actually sit and enjoy the view with a cup of coffee. (I never drank coffee until I retired)

Same view from outside the rear of my shop

I know when you DON'T have to do anything, doing something isn't a chore.

Here is my Morning Coffee View:
