This big machine was being used to shred trees that were being cleared out of a new industrial park near my office...
The trees looked to be about 12" in diameter & this thing was shooting chips over 100' in the air...

shade2u2,

I need to borrow that machine for a couple of days! /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif But
I'm afraid to ask what the per hour charge would cost me! /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

I have lots of wood to get rid of and I have two choices. Burn it. Or
get a processor to take of the problem.

Burning is cheaper.... /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

But I would LOVE to have the chips....

Later...

That the cat meow for sure..better than burning big brush piles on a rainy day.

Hope they wear ear plugs

Do you think that thing takes a Cat I or a Cat II hitch? /w3tcompact/icons/eyes.gif/w3tcompact/icons/hmm.gif/w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif/w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

I recently built a new house. I had to clear about 2 acres of fir trees, which comes out to be about 400 trees. I wanted to have the stumps ground up in one of those big grinding machines. It just seemed to be more eco-groovy than burning, and we wouldn't have to deal with getting a burn permit in the middle of a forest. Then I found out the price.

Three outfits bid the job. The most common price was $5000.00 to setup (yep, thats a five thousand), plus $1500 a day to grind. That doesn't include the trackhoe required to load the stumps into the hopper, which is $1000.00 a day. In theory, it would have taken 2 days, making this a $10,000.00 bill.

The burn pile cost me $50 for the permit, $100 in labor to have someone sit and watch the fire burn at night, and $10 in beer to keep my labor happy overnight. The trackhoe was onsite doing the clearing anyway, so that still cost me a few grand which was paid for by selling the timber.

Great idea, overpriced in my area!

The local rental place has a big diesel powered chipper that can handle up to 16"...but at $400 a day and some sort of monster truck to haul it up my hill! /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif It irks me to burn all that stuff, especially since around here all fires must be put out at night. Maybe when I take delivery of my new backhoe I can practice by digging a big trench and burying all that stuff! /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

Maybe I missed something. /w3tcompact/icons/eyes.gif Did you decide to purchase a Woods 7500 Backhoe? /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

Isn't 16" diameter wood called firewood rather than chipper fodder?/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif
