I am not quite sure I would agree....
The natural beauty /climate has not improved, if anything the beauty has slowly eroded due to the waste/trash strewn EVERYWHERE

We just had earth day and the beaches were as pristine as ever... same for the Redwoods like Big Basin...

Probable because a lot of the city folks seldom get out and those that do have respect.

I'm looking out the living room window and SF is picture postcard... 80 degrees out at 9 pm and the 5 Bay Bridges are ribbons of light across the water with the SF skyline making for a gorgeous backdrop... my favorite view is at night on a clear and calm evening...

Always been blessed with the best neighbors... kind of spoils a person... and the neighborhood is as diverse as ever... two white families... one is LGBT pulse African American and Asian LGBT and Asian and African Americans fill in the rest...

Folks are respectful... keep up their homes and all are professionals or retired professionals... teachers, utility work, small business, etc...

I would say this is representative of much of the Bay Area... it is really a collection of neighborhoods... the demographics have changed a lot... at one time Oakland was about half African American and now about 25%... the white and Hispanic population continues to grow along with Asian... the real growth has been LGBT families or all ethnicities...

Where I bought my first home it was all elderly white original home owners from the 1920's... nice block... then almost each home was bought by African American or mixed families followed by Asian and then in 2005 it was going 100% Spanish speaking... the Foreclosure crisis hit and just about all home sales are young urban white professionals or mixed couples... all over the last 40 years...

Edit... in full disclosure I see SF daily... but seldom ever venture in unless with out of town company.

I dunno, I have not been to the area in 5-6 months now, but last spring and summer, between Richmond and Brentwood, I have seen the most debris/litter along the highways I have seen anywhere I have traveled. I was shocked at the amount. Litter was everywhere, especially on the east side of the bay area!
One trip leaving Brentwood at 5 AM heading for SFO, I counted 5 mattresses along the highway.

^^^ a lot of the litter around the big cities out here is what blows out of the drug encampments. The drug users living on the street collect it from garbage cans and drag it back to the encampment. After sorting through it they leave the remaining debris on the street or wherever. Then the wind blows it around.

I wish the greenies would protest the pollution and impact that untreated feces, urine and whatever else does to the environment and go head to head in a battle with the encampment people. I would pay to watch that.

The real reason is two folds... jobs and those drawn here plus the natural beauty/climate...

Curiously, what is the normal climate there? I've only been in SF twice in my life, and both times it was in the 50s, overcast and drizzling. Both times were in the summer, and 25 mi. inland it was sunny & warm. Did I just hit 2 bad days?

Agree on the jobs, all those Silicon Valley techies have to live somewhere. As far as beauty, so much of that is in the eye of the beholder.

You got that right... there is a segment that go out of their way to litter on purpose and blatant.

I've said litter or the lack of it is one way to view a region.
