The oil companies seem to be charging by BTU content now. A gallon of diesel has more BTU's than a gallon of Gasoline so it will cost more.

I was under the impression it was the tax man and not the oil companies that pushed the cost of diesel higher than gas...

Wonder which it is? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I was under the impression that petrol [gas] requires more refining than diesel so therefor it should cost more.
I suspect that [our] government may be looking at the rapidly increasing ratio of diesel cars to petrol cars and thinking....
'hmmmmm - we may be missing a bit of tax action here. Lets stuff a load of tax on diesel'

I also suspect that although I'm a big fan of democracy, our government is made up of people that couldn't find proper jobs

I think the more stringent requirements for low sulfur diesel may be part of the reason it's costing more.
I remember that diesel was always a good bit less than gasoline when I was growing up, but now it's a good bit more around here.

Good point. I hadn't thought of that.

John,

Why do I keep hearing the lyrics of that old Beetle song...

"The tax man....yea the tax man...???"

While I don't doubt that sulfur needs to be taken out of fuel, it is probably also taken out of gasoline...

I bet its " The tax man...yea the taaaaax man..." /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Ok...
I´ve followed the discussion, and only can say that:For Germany it´s the same like for UK...land is expensive...noone with a normal Job can afford to buy some land, gas price is high (around 6$/gal),Diesel is bit cheaper then gasoline. CUT´s, when for sale are worn out and expensive. For the price of a mowingtractor (not JD...they are very expensive here) with B$S engine, maybe 40 " deck, grasscollector...ergo only a tractor You can mow Your lawn with you can buy something like the tractor at the attached pic. This is an Eicher with a 72 HP perkins engine and was bought for around 3000$...now it is ready for use, after investment of another 600$...and for 3600$ I only can buy a Yard-Man or MTD mowingtractor here!!

Nice job on the Eicher - just put a big mower on the back and it's ready for work.
I know it makes sense to match the tractor to the job in hand, but sometimes being sensible can be a bit boring /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
At least I've got a heater now so I can cope with our summer!
