I was bragging to a friend about Big Tree park in Sanford, FL and when I searched it online I found this.
Loser quote of the year:

So sad. It appears that the fence should have been installed sooner, but hopefully it will aid in protecting the other tree.

Wow! That is so unthinking and idiotic.

I'm guessing you have been enjoying the thread on all the old, large, famous trees where folks have been posting great pics from all over the world. Then, to see something as senseless as this.... words just fail me.

And one of the bad fallouts of this is that all these trees then getto be fenced in, sorta' like putting the last of a species into a zoo. I feel, though likely necessary, that this is a real loss as well.

Uhhhhhh, if you click on the link to view pictures of the tree before it was burned you'll see that there are pictures there from as far back as 1953!! And in them there IS a fence around it then!! This was a deliberate act of idiocy...

I have been to that park as a kid. The wifey and I were talking about visiting the park on one of our vacations since she has never seen the tree nor have our kids. They are impressive.

Shortly after we talked the druggies burned down the tree.

Near the park, right along the road, there used to be a pipe that popped up out of the ground. The pipe had running water pouring out of it into the ditch alongside this major road. People would stop and fill up jugs of that water. I think it was just sulphery water but they drank it. :confused2: YUCK. I would guess that road has been widened since then and that pipe and water is gone....

The park is actually in Longwood which is north of Orlando and south of Sanford.

Must have been. Twas a small little pipe, the size that would supply water in a house. It was odd. Just sitting there with people filling up old milk jugs.
