I am a little surprised about the WWII conversation that no-one seemed to mention that the Japanese bombed, invaded and occupied a piece of Alaska for almost a year.

Japanese Forces in Alaska
The initial Japanese landing took place on June 7, 1942, when the Third Special Landing Force (550 Japanese naval men) stormed ashore. Over the next few months, additional units arrived and the occupation force eventually grew to about 5,640 military and 1,170 civilians.

The Japanese occupation of Attu was the result of an invasion of the Aleutian Islands in Alaska during World War II. Imperial Japanese Army troops landed on 7 June 1942 the day after the invasion of Kiska. Along with the Kiska landing, it was the first time that the continental United States was invaded and occupied by a foreign power since the War of 1812, and was the second of the only two invasions of the United States during World War II. The occupation ended with the Allied victory in the Battle of Attu on 30 May 1943.

Familiar with it, but stayed away from it only because it didn't happen in the lower 48, added Alaska didn't become a state until the late 50's.

I find it ironic that I'm Russian Othodox, and my grandparents worked in the coal mines in Pa off the boat in the early 1900's (coming in from Ellis Island), and Russia had a huge influence in Alaska even before then.

One could argue that our one big melting pot of a country is what makes it one of the most remarkable in the world.

Speaking of the Japanese campaign in the Aleutians, it hi-lites the reason why the Japanese couldn't get it together during the War.

Everything they did had to be done as a consensus. Everything. The Aleutians were nothing more than a diversion for the Midway Invasion but there were some that wanted to invade Alaska for various reasons. Some good ones but mostly stupid ones.

So they decided to do both. When all the had to do was send ALL their Carriers and wipe Midway off the map. It would have been a no-brainer with that much firepower, and easily the best Navy in the world at that time. But, nope, They had to have a consensus, so to make some Admirals happy they tried both.

It's part of their National Character. Not knocking it, there's a lot to be said for consensus. But not in a time of War.

If you study the Japanese, especially in times of War, it's just how they operate. They tend to lose a lot, too.

None of the Axis Powers had Long Range Bombers for one thing. I am not enamored of the WWII Japanese or German Air Forces. Paper Tigers, IMO.
Ironcially enough the United States thought enough of German rocket/flight technology, along with medical expertise (at the experimentation on humans / Jews) that our government gave a lot of "brain" ****'s free passes after WW2 and was swept under the rug. Go figure.

Think about it. Nazies were going after long range missiles, not bombers. If given enough time, the outcome of WW2 could have changed drastically.

Politics aside, WW2 to stop the axis powers was a nobel and good cause. There were a LOT of people who didn't want the US involved in another war after WW1.

My last living uncle who served in WW2 is now 95. He's living in a rest home, has parkinson's, and dementia is kicking in and he was never married, no children and my cousin is taking care of him. Off topic, but IMO our entire country owes nothing but gratitude to those men who's butts were drafted to fight in WW1 and WW2. We as a nation forget what those men had to endure to keep our freedom as we know it.

Dang, little off topic

Surprised your relatives didn't come in through Cleveland.

God Bless your Grandparents for having the courage to pick up and leave for a land they didn't know and where the people didn't even speak the same language. No matter how bad things were in Russia (and they were) it still took a lot of courage. I salute them

The Germans got all their rocket technology from Robert Goddard.

I believe my grandmother came off the boat with her sister.

I don't know the whole story, but my grandmother ended up in Pennsylvania, and her sister ended up in Chicago. Lots of Eastern Europeans ended up working in the coal mines of Pa for whatever reason.

I'm old school. When my dad served in SE Asia, and me and my mom lived with my grandmother, Russian was only spoken in the house and church. Everywhere else it was English.

My grandmother was amazing. First husband killed in the coal mines and she had 6 kids. Married another coal miner (whose wife died as well) with 5 kids, and they had one child together for a total of 12.

Lots of people know about their family through generations. My family started when my grandparents came off the boat.

Interstate transport of firearms isn't governed by the States. It is governed by the Feds abd they have specific laws about it. States can, and often do, have their own restrictions in place. But most civilized States just use the Federal standards.

If you're from Florida (or anywhere else for that matter) and have a carry permit, stay out of Maryland. They have (and have for a while) license plate readers that, somehow, can determine if you have a carry permit.

And if you do, you are more likely to be pulled over and searched by their State Stasi than people without a carry permit. I don't believe they, along with several other States that lean in a certain political direction (the usual suspects), reciprocate with other States CCW permits.

And they will ruin your life. They like it. That's just how they role.

Read this and beware:

Wearing a seat belt? I remember when cars didn't even have them. I resisted them at first but after I got used to them, I kindda like them. Especially when you have a bit of a 'performance' car. One that will handle a turn better than Grandma's Station Wagon. They help plant you in the seat in turns.
That is so wrong on so many levels...

I need those seat belts in my Thunderbird.
