Bird Seed Bandit Strikes Again

I've got a neighbor who would probably enjoy a bear hunt. Former Ranger.

Black Bear would be very unlikely, but not impossible. A few have been documented on Game Cameras in Smith County. I haven't heard of anything lately, but a few years ago, the local news channels where talking about them being here.

I think it's a racoon.

My answer for coons is a 17HMR or a 22. Pizz on the live trap. Besides, what do you do if you catch it? Same applies to Opossums.

Easy, feed it bird seed…

This is my viewpoint also, although the poster below yours had a good answer.

I have a "dog proof coon trap".

https://www.cabelas.com/shop/en/minnesota-trapline-bridger-t3-dog-proof-eco-coated-raccoon-trap?ds_e=MICROSOFT&ds_c=Cabelas|Shopping|Smart|Hunting|General|NAud|NVol|NMT&msclkid=4031414fa9e61279d0f827130406c6ee&gclid=4031414fa9e61279d0f827130406c6ee&gclsrc=3p.ds. I never tried it as the year I was having problems they died by other means, but these are supposed to work well.

Set up a game camera or two. Not only shows what is causing the problem, but may show how it is doing the deed.
A game cam works for me on critters and tells you who the culprit is and how many. I blamed a coon and it was possums all along. I live trap and take 5 miles away to a stream tributary that's protected as something "scenic". OK, sure. None have ever come back. All creatures deserve to live.

A lot of people have that viewpoint, so take their unwanted animals "out on some backroad" to release it.

I live on that backroad, and am tasked with putting up with or killing the animals which somebody else didn't want. I just paid $27 for a box of lead free .22 wmr shells so that I can leave the carcasses for something to feed on. I even had a rat for a couple of years which I suspect arrived that way.

Amen, brother. Same here.

Watch nature for a few minutes and you soon learn that no creatures deserve to live. Nearly everything is simultaneously hunting and being hunted. Some critters are down right cruel to their prey, too.

Dumping a wild critter that has learned to feed from humans just moves the problem. Often you are dumping that poor critter into another's territory and they may not survive that encounter.
Dumping your unwanted pets in country mostly means a dead pet from wildlife, starvation or a bullet.
We get all kind of dogs dumped out here, if they run in here and go after my livestock or pets they die, if they do not AND the pack of giants approves they may stay unless they can not learn the rules.
